Planning to do this in a day, on Thursday, in the Scirocco. Technically I'm going John O'Groats to Lands End :)

What can possibly go wrong in a C reg Scirocco?!

Has anyone else done any substantial road trips in their Scirocco? I think it'll do 1,750 miles between tomorrow morning and Friday which isn't bad going!

:)

Colin (DT1), always does mega trips when he attends shows in the Midlands, Aberdeen to Stratford for Inters must be knocking on 400 miles each way or even more!

I hope you enjoy your trip.

Colin uses his car regularly so it is known to be in good mechanical order. Having said that, I only ever used my 82 GTI for longer trips and it never let me down; I had it serviced regularly and it was kept in good condition. If you look after your scirocco, there's no reason it shouldn't be up to a long journey.

i went to isle of white from birmingham and back on a blown head gasket. i didnt realise at the time but it made it all the way there and back.
just take it easy and take some spares with you.
- alternator belt
- good spare wheel
- tyre repair can (the foam type) incase spare fails
- pump
- 2 litre bottle of water (if you dont drink it the car might need to)
but as has been said, providing you look after these cars they will look after you.

The local Volkswagen TPS has delivered me a G60 steel this afternoon so I have a proper spare wheel.

I'm also bringing a fan belt, oil, water, foot pump and a small tool kit.

The Scirocco had a mountain of work done to it in June 2012:

Bilstein B4 Dampers
Eibach Springs
Eibach Anti Roll Bars
Febi Top Mounts
Poly Bushes (all)
Lemforder Wishbones
Lemforder Ball Joints
Lemforder Steering Arms
Lemforder Track Rod Ends
Recon Steering Rack
Goodridge Hoses
Rigid Brake Lines
Front calipers overhauled
Genuine 256 discs and pads
ATE Wheel Cylinders, Drums and Shoes
SKF wheel bearings

September 2012:

Head gasket
Timing belt and tensioner
Valve Guides
Valve Stem Oil Seals
Clutch
Crank seals, front and rear

March 2013:

New G60's with Michelin Pilot Exalto tyres

May 2013:

Injection Pump recalibrated
Under bonnet fuel horse replaced
Fuel filter
Oil and filter

It runs a Mk2 Golf GTD engine which has lately been doing 53mpg.
I'm hoping that'll improve with a long motorway run.

Hopefully all the recent work will ensure no issues, fingers crossed, touch wood etc! If all else fails, I'm in the AA until 21 July!

Do you have any form of timetable as I could meet you and escort you for a while.
Anywhere between Perth and Abington.
Good luck if we can't meet up.
:bye:

Nothing set in stone but I was thinking of leaving John O'Groats at sunrise (4am?) and making my way south.

Not sure what time I'll be passing Broxden Services off the A9?

I'm planning to obey limits on the A9 and not exceed "10% + 2" on the motorways!

When I bought my last mk2 it had been off the road for 2 years. I drove it from Birmingham back to Ireland with absolutely nothing done to it apart from fresh petrol.

I bought a mk2 near Devises that had been off the road for a few years... Just passed an MoT, conked out on the M5 with what turned out to be ignition amplifier failure. I think that's the only one of the many Sciroccos I've bought over the years that has let me down.

A GTL auto I bought somewhere in East Anglia with known overheating problem (head gasket) made it all the way back to Birmingham with the temp gauge at max all the way home.

A rather rotten GTX that I bought for £100 drove all the way from Bristol to Truro.

Generally, they're simple, reliable cars.

Well I'm at John O'Groats and the Scirocco is running like a Swiss watch. Returned a very respectable 54mpg on the way up too!

Early start in the morning!

my mk2 went on more towtrucks than i've had hot dinners, cold dinners, snacks, drinks...

ironic really, considering what my day job is
