classic case of someone execting to get all the money back that theyve put into a car. sadly it never happens
nice car though and its clear that a lot of time and money has gone into it.

its definitely put me off the idea of mk1 golf chrome bumpers though
they really are far too small for roccos

i really liked the way mine looked without the bumpers so thought these might be a good shout instead of putting full size bumpers back on but i dont think i will now.

back to fruitlessly looking for rocco chrome bumpers it is then :(

Why not just get your bumpers plated?

Someone on here was doing carbon reps - somewhere near 700 a set i think - made to order

I have thought about having some fabricated - and having them coated but i bet it would be really hard to achieve a oem style finish.

18k.... struggling to see where the money went.

Whip the plastic covers off, and they look virtually identical to original metal ones. Heritage still list end caps I think

The plastic bumper irons are full of holes for the plastic outers to clip too. It would mean welding up the holes but with the prices of metal bumpers rising this might be a cost worthy option.

Classic parts only sell the caps for one side. Now the other side second hand have gone up in value due to this.

Trimsport will be doing all the metal bumper parts in carbon in the near future. :chill:

Hello!

The metal inserts from the plastic bumpers can be used as chrome bumper replacements, done it myself.

I did not weld up all the holes however as the rubber strip came to my rescue from that point of view.

I MIG welded the rest of the holes and let the chromers and polishers do the rest.

One tip I did get was not to MIG weld the holes up actually, but to fill them with braze or braze and metal as this is better in terms of finishing chrome / polishing wise.

Cost me £300 cash for both bumpers to be chromed / polished. That is what I think is a fair price for a decent / average set of genuine chrome bumpers, with the end caps / rubber strips, then that would be a bonus. Fair enough to pay more for NOS jobbies.

My pair were sold with the car, really sort of wish I kept them, just to stick on the garage wall even ! :hehe:

Thanks for the info!
I would also like to see some pics before i butcher my plastic bumpers :p
to be honest i'd be happy with a set of metal bumpers which were just nicely finished in silver (obviously chrome would be far better but still...)
so I may give this method a shot

Hello!

No butchering of bumpers required really they come apart easily enough like the MK 2 bumpers do.

I think there was a couple of holes I half filled that would mean the plastic bumper skin could not go back on but you could always cut the plastic skin.

If I had a £1 for everytime I was asked for a photo of these I would be a rich young man :hehe: Alas the photos I took were on the SIM card of my old phone that I dropped in the bath.

I wished I had never let them go with the car :crying:

I can remember the chap saying clear as day that bought that MK 1 that he prefrered the plastic bumpers :shocking: :swoon:

i've been trying to find some part bumpers, like you used to get on some 70s fords and vaux. has roughly 1/3 of the bumper not there in the middle. can't decide if it would look good or not
