Hi guys. I have been using a jvc head unit for a couple of years. Recently the power cable (yellow and red wires intertwined) became loose so I soldered them back into the plug. Anyway. I pulled the head unit out yesterday and the solder broke causing a poof of smoke. The head unit was powered on at the time by the way. I bought a new cable as I thought the old one couldn't be soldered again. The fuse had blown in the main fuse box (15amp) so I replaced that. But the head unit won't turn on :( the fuse in the head unit itself is fine and I have tested the head unit directly on the battery and it piwers up fine. Baffled. Please help!

Do you have an in-line fuse on the live cable, sounds like it?

See I thought that. Had a look at all the visible wiring and couldn't see one. And surely the fuse in the fuse box would not have blown?

Do you have a multimeter? If so check power on the live feed, is fuse number 3 in properly? Could it be that the new cable you bought is the wrong one?

The cable is exactly the same as my previous one.. I have checked every fuse in the box just to be sure and yes it was only number three that had blown.
I am absolutely useless with a multimeter so if you could offer guidense that would be great
I know where to put it on. But what setting should I have selected on the meter?

Depends on which multimeter but generally set to less than 20v DC.
