Brake relay rod - odd noise

I've noticed recently that when applying the brakes there is a occasional noise from the left side the of the car, not quite a 'clonk' but noticeable, doesn't seem to matter whether applied lightly or firmly.

Have had a quick look at the left-hand bell-crank assembly and tried pulling the rod manually but no obvious sign of damage or excessive play.

Anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?

Get someone to work the pedal while you try and find the noise.

I just had this on the mk1 cabrio... Presume I'd washed the important grease off with the pressure washer. A lash of white spray grease round all the pivots has made it go away. (Obviously, more suitable grease is available/recommended - I just used that as I had the can in my hand!)
