I've got the rear beam all stripped and ready for media blasting and coating but not convinced what finish to go for ?
Plastic coating is easy and cheap, and looks good when first done, guess that's why it's used on garden furniture, broom handles and childrens toys ? but I've seen it lift and damage with age and get water/rust between the plastic layer and the metal. Does anybody know if the finish is damaged can it be repaired locally (like touching up paint) or is it a case of having to strip it all off and start again ? Paint seems like a better option to me but, I'm open to ideas ??

Just use chassis black paint mate

i'd avoid hammerite, as once it has fully set (takes ages) it will chip very easily

Thank chopperoli, I think that's a good idea. Wouldn't mind a tin of whatever veedub used in the first place tho, most of it's still intact after 25 years !

Thanks Nate, Re Hammerite chipping D'Oh ! I've allready used Hammerite on the Backplates ! They were blasted first and painted straight away, then I baked it on so maybe it'll stick ?

I will use Rustoleum as I have a big tin of black stuff, I believe it is better than Hammerite. These are paints that tend to like pitted surfaces and can be better with primers. Good thing is you can touch up any chips as you go. I will be spraying cavity wax (Bilt Hamber dynax s-50) down the tube sections. Might even put a coat of the UB stuff they do that is like an underseal with wax.

So many ways to go, Frosts POR stuff and with complete rust removal even primer and two pack.

Por 15 is great stuff but you MUST be really careful. Do not get that stuff on your skin as it won't come off

rustolem is meant to be good stuff - if you haven't already, check out the rustoleum $50 paint job which has now got durability updates added

Thanks for the help - defo not goin the plastic coating route now, seems like there's a lot of decent paint type products out there.

If you're local to leicester I'll do good deals on corrosion resistant powdercoating. Unless you've already sorted it?
