Ive got a working wiper motor.

Post by mark1gls »

My front wiper has been a bit temperamental since I got the car back on the road in 2010, it worked sometimes but slowly and if the windscreen was dry it would just stop half way, most times it was fine in the rain, a couple of times I had to pull over and give the wiper a hand to get started again, good thing about the MK1 the wind screen is very sloppy and if you got up any speed the rain would just run off! I do drive the car sometimes in the rain but not very often so its not really been a problem but it was the last MOT, luckly it worked the second time they tried it.
Any way here are some pics

My Mk1 one is at the top of the photo, don't know what the did to end of the other assembly. Also note the differnet plugs and motor angle.

My old motor on the right, one seems to left handed the other right...

Plug connection on new motor, wiring taken from a MK3 golf in the scrap yard.
Image
I was going to dismantle the new motor and swap them over but the new motor seems to be sealed unlike the old motor.
Image
Tried to fit the new motor to the car as it was hitting the scuttle I noticed the holes was different on the assembly, old at the top, new at the bottom.
Image
I had to drill some new holes so the motor would fit.

Finally fitted, I had to move the heater motor resistor over a little but when the covers on you dont notice. Now my wiper works even on a dry windscreen

I have a shagged motor, I would not mind finding out what I could put in as a replacement. I had a spare with a few years thankfully,

Here's a mk2 golf motor for 99p that will fit
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vw-Golf-MK2-w ... 4173a5e92f

I got a plug and wires from a mk3 golf in the scrap yard which fitted.
My wiper works great now, it will even work on a dry windscreen which it would not before.

Jimmy, it was a mk4 polo motor I had on mine, and it could fairly fling a brick! best upgrade I made so far as driving in the wet is concerned!

I was going to post this in the tech section but thought id more than likely get the answer here :p

my front wiper on the mk1 seems a bit slow and the speed doesnt change from one setting to the next

knackered motor or knackered relay?

I have a mk2 golf motor but not the wires/connector
though i could improvise

cheers

If it's got tits or tyres it's trouble but I always go back for more.

knackered motor or knackered relay?
more likely to be the relay or switch if the wiper works at all

mk2 of mk3 golf motors work quite well - i have this planned and it will match my CE2 fusebox too. You can also adjust the rear wiper so it sits horizontally and not vertically on a mk1 golf - but thats for another forum i guess...

So many plans, so little time

Mine was going rather slow and stopping halfway through a wipe, I did have another relay which I tried but made no difference. If you do have a spare I would try that first.
After I have been driving mine in the rain a few times I would recommend fitting a later motor, the wiper goes alot faster than it did on both speeds.
I found there was plenty of Mk3 golf in the scrap yard, you have to find the wire just below the front windscreen (drivers side) behind a plastic cover, make sure it has 5 wires coming from the plug, I followed the wire as far as I could (about 15cm) then cut it off, striped the wires and put on 5 spade connectors and pluged it into my socket on the scirocco.
