Car Whistles?

Hi guys and gals, hope this is the right place for this post? On starting my 1990 Scala with engine cold, when I up the revs and pull away I get a whistle from engine area? Doesn't last long, goes when engine warmed up.

Any ideas on what could cause this ? Cheers in advance.

Hi,
Loose alternator belt would be my first guess.

Is the whistle more of a sqealling noise, if yes agree with Ben, VW's are notorious for if with a loose (and damp) alternator belt.

I concur, I get this all the time in cold weather.

Agree with all the above, only other thought may be timing belt tensioner starting to wear, alternator or water pump may be worth checking too.

Thanks for the tips guys, thought it might be something to do with a leak in the vacuum somewhere as is a whistle more than a squeal, but will definitely check out the belt first. Good to hear from you Ian, hope you and your Rocco are well.

I'm good Dougie thanks, cars are fine also.
Is the whistle that loud you can hear it from inside the car? I would have thought that if it was a vacumn hose it would be doing it all the time?

Just a thought, but if the car's had any work done on the timing/cam belt, it could be that the tensioner has been overtightened.

Hi again, doesn't do it all the time Ian but can definitely hear it in the car alright, sounds like a bloody turbo lol. Am working away up at Lincoln atm but off home tomorrow night for four days so will investigate further on Thursday. Once again I really appreciate all the help from you guys, still the best forum around.

If the sound changes with the revs/sound like a turbo I would check the tension of the cam belt.
Mine used to make a noise when hot but was ok when cold?
