Alternator

Post by fairlo »

Hi guys

am getting the battery light flickering every now and then have replaced the battery so am guessing its the alternator on its way out, does anyone know if the alternator of a 1.6 gt will fit my 1.6 cl, the alternator on mine now has no sticker on it with a part number so am finding it really difficult to track down the right alternator.

thanks

I would guess they would be the same as they are both 1.6, do they look the same?
Also have you check the tightness of the alternator belt, the plug on the back of the alternator, any earth wires lose?

You can fit an alternator from a GT to your CL, the only thing you need to be aware of are tue connections, some cars came with a plug, most don't though. A good bet is an upgrade to a 90 amp alternator if you can get on, your will probably be 45 or 55 at the moment.

What amp battery did you fit?
Might help with what alternator you need.

In your last pic you will notice a black circular piece held on by two screws it is called a " ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE REGULATOR".
Remove this part and you will find two brushes, these tend to ware away through time.
If you have a spare alt swop them over or buy a new unit as they are about 12 squid on ebay.
Here is a link to show you what you are after showing you the brushes, but this is a dear one, you can get them cheaper.

Good luck.

thanks very much for the tip, have the chance to buy a working alternator from a 1988 1.6gt for less than £30 have assessed vagcat at they list around 10 different alternator part numbers for my car, that suggests that pretty much any scirocco alternator will fit mine is my thinking sound or do i need to investigate further?

thanks

Just checked an old brochure, you CL was originally fitted with a 45 amp alternator.

After seeing the pictures one thing I would be changing is that thing of an oil filter! A genuine VW filter costs less than £4 from the dealer and Synta Silver oil is £17 for 5 litres!

99% of alternator problems are the brush pack, which also contains the voltage regulator. They can be got for £12 HERE and take 5 minutes to fit :)

p.s. Hey, Ian, when would a Scirocco would need a 90 amp alternator   aitbpt ;)

Greater output amp = more electrical items used in cars these days, sat-nav, radio/cd, heater on, heated rear screen, electric windows..................need I say more! :geek:

Yes ;)

No, only joking.

Us T25 camper van owners know all about current consumption  In addition to the items you mention, we have fridges, TV's, Laptops, Night heaters (gas but 12V mechanicals), water pumps, lots of fancy interior lighting, chargers for a variety of stuff (model aircraft etc  ) and of course a separate leisure battery to charge. Erm, I think that's about it

Still don't think you'd ever need 90 amps on a Rocco :buddy: ;)
