1979 Storm value

Post by steveb »

I have had a 1979 Storm for a few years now in need of some restoration. it's not been modded in anyway as far as i can tell, the worst parts, it's been painted a non standard colour. wings are excellent rear arches need attention the bottom of the doors are showing signs of rust from a previous repairs. The floor needs welding where it meets the inner sills, difficult i know, but any ideas how much would this be worth as a guide ? I could be losing the space it is stored in !

Hi Steve,
What's it worth? I'm afraid to say IMHO maybe not a lot.
With a MK1 you never really know the true condition structurally until you start looking deep, and you have to, because they are all rot boxes.
If you have a look at any of the MK1's in the Projects and Restorations area on this site (mine included) they all have serious structural corrosion issues, and to be repaired properly you really are going to need a Professional to do the job right - and they don't come cheap if you pay by the hour like I did!!!

You could however rely on someone, professional? who may want to do it 'Part Time' but you need to consider have you the time to wait for them? Job's like that always start with the best intentions and never really come to much.

Consider a good respray will set you back in advance of 2.5 - 3K WITHOUT doing any more than basic prep - forget welding and other stuff.
Another thing to consider is, there is a really great MK1 Storm in the classifieds section of this site T&T and with superb credentials which is currently up for 3K and has been for a while now - you do the Math :shocking:

I suspect from the way you describe your car, it may run? but will not have MOT and/or Tax, if this is the case you may get less than 1K for it as it stands (being lucky) or maybe more broken for spares.
I apologise in advance if this is not what you want to hear, but I've been a MK1 nut for a long time ~ (30 years) and please hear me on this: they are NOT an investment or something that is likely to be...

To get anything like some sort of reward from them, you have to be bonkers....

I agree with jimmy h, do it because you want to drive a great car, finish your journey with a smile on your face, strangers coming up to you saying "I used to own one of these or love the car"
You will spend more than its worth at the moment restoring the car but in the future who knows... If you was buying a mk1 golf gti you are looking to spend £7000 to buy a A1 fully restored example.

If you are going ahead with this project expecting to make money as soon as possible don't do it, sell it to someone who will restore it and enjoy it not break it for spares, there are not many left and I'm sure they will go up in value soon.
Some photos will give us a better idea of value etc.....

I'm not looking to make money on it, just an idea of a fair price, it did have an mot when i brought it a few years ago. no use since and mostly stored inside since then, it did run last time i tried which will be a couple of years ago now. I'm not near the car for a few days so no pics at the moment. I would want it to be restored not broken for spares. would £500-750 be the right sort of figure ?

Seems fair. I'd expect it to make at least that much in a no-reserve auction on eBay.

Not sure if this helps but...

i bought my '79 storm for £1900
it already had the essential welding done (sections of sills, rear arches and a couple of other places) also had the break and fuel lines replaced, and fuel filler neck, new brakes all round etc etc.

the paint, though original, is shot to bits and it still needed a fair bit of rust chasing back
and though it runs/drives/stops fine it had a crack in the exhaust downpipe so wasnt technically roadworthy.

all in all it had probably had around £3k spent on it before i even got my hands on it
id say that the state its in now id be very lucky to get over £2k and ive tidied it up a hell of a lot too including a nice new set of rare wheels.

ive had it over a year and the work is just beginning really.

id say you could get something close to £750 for yours

good luck with whatever happens anyway

If it's got tits or tyres it's trouble but I always go back for more.
