Correct Brake Setup - 1990 MK2 1.8

Hey guys I am rebuilding a scirocco mk2 1.8 from 1990, first time on a vw, I have replaced the brakes but now I cannot get the calipers on. The piston has been pushed back into the caliper as far as it goes using a proper piston compression tool, so it now lies flush with the rubber seal. The discs are vented, and the brake pads are EBC greenstuff pads.
Photographs can be found here:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/1147 ... 0883896385
The brake pads are part number DP2517/2, and the discs are mintex:

The calipers have a big VW stamp on them so I presume they are VW and not lucas or girling types?
Has anyone had this problem before?
Many thanks, Phil

Make sure that you have the correct pads for the vented discs. They are not as thick as those for the solid discs. Calipers are the same though.

Thanks, I did read that on the forum but I have checked the part number and it returns the same pads on 3 different websites, they are 19mm thick including the backing plate, the pad material itself is just over 15mm thick, this does seem to be too much as the ones on gsf come in two thicknesses at 19.7mm or 15.3mm.
Should the thickness measurements include the backing plate? The pads I bought were this listing:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/390464051784? ... 26_rdc%3D1
which states they are 15mm but the total thickness is 19mm as I said previously.

I've just been out to the garage with a torch and tape measure to check some brand new pads. They are mintex 1144s and are 14mm thick including the back plate, so it sounds like you have been given pads for solid disks.
Hope this helps.

Just to let you know, I phoned the supplier and they seem to think the wrong pads were in the box, they measured some at the store and they came in at 15mm so they are sending a new set out to me this week.
SO:
15mm for vented discs
19mm for solid discs
Simple!
