Custom boot / arches carpeting

I'm on with giving my car a good freshen up over the winter. The boot is looking a bit worse for wear to be honest. The arches have the odd scuff and scratch from be being a klutz when loading by gear in and out.

anyway, i'm thinking of carpeting the whole of the boot, that includes the tailgate, boot floor, back of the rear bench and the arches.
The idea was to use acoustic carpet and spray adhesive on the whole lot and making a circular cover for the spare wheel. The arches will be a pain though.
Would permanently covering the interior bodywork cause any problems with moisture / rust? or will it be fine as long as i don't let the boot be continuously soaked?

also, if anyone sees a problem or has done something similar and has some pointers, i'm all ears.
cheers.

Mk1 or Mk2 or Mk3 Scirocco?

Mk1 Storm models were supplied with carpeted inner arch covers and boot mat as standard -good for a template.

Mk2 GL, GTI, GTX and GTL were supplied with inner rear arch covers as standard. Source a set from a breaker?

Mk3, dunno.

I can see the reason for the carpeting of the boot, but the hatch?

thanks alot, I can easily get some mdf cut to fit nicely into the boot floor, that should make things easier.

How much would you say it would take to carpet everything? would 3x1m be enough or would i need more?

cheers

I'd cut the mdf myself using a cardboard template as it isn't nearly as symmetrical as it appears. I end up cutting it then adding bits. The back plate I can trace onto paper and send you if you want.
3/4x1 should be enough. Use good quality stuff though, something that'll bend. It sounds odd but some of the cheaper stuff doesn't go round corners well. Got a link to the person I use on eBay if that helps.

By back plate I mean an actual board along the rear.

I'd recommend marine ply as you'll save a lot of weight compared with MDF. It's what any sensible camper van interior would be made of.

wow, thats impressive. i think i'll save you the hassle of sending a template over, mate. Ive got a joiner mate who'll give me a hand with all the tools and knowhow (when it comes to making the wooden bits anyway) i'd need. I was wondering how pliable the fabric would be, a like to the stuff you used would be great. the last think i want is an arch covered in kinks because the fabric didnt form well.

I've got to be honest getting that whole rear side done in one piece was a farkin' horrendous job. It involved making rear door card blanks and end bit in wood and fibre glass. Yours will be much easier as I'm assuming you've still got rear seats which means you'll have the parcel mounts. All of mine where removed so those end pieces had to be made up which was a total focker. It's all come out as you can see where it wasn't totally flat when I carpeted it (you can see it in the pic).
Your best bet would be to carpet the tower and rear side floor separately. That way any errors and kinks will be hidden by the board on the deck and the side. The link is below, it's excellent value for money, just spray the adhesive and stretch it over from the edges so you don't get kinks. If you're anywhere near me I'm more than happy to help as long as you supply tea.

One point I would make is that if any of your sounds are in the rear you'll need to think ahead. The golf rear you can see looked great and the sound was corking but we had to make ports and rejig as we'd effectively made a sealed box that didn't allow any of the bass out!

*Edit - Just looked into Ed's Marine Ply suggestion. Top idea.
