Scirocco Register

I am looking to replace the bottom bush on my steering column as I have play when I hold the steering wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and move it, you can see the shaft moving inside the steering column by the UJ joint at the bottom.

When I looked at the Haynes manual it talks about removing the pedals etc, can I remove the shaft with out taking the pedals off and undoing the shear bolts eg leave the outside of the steering column in the car, undo the UJ joint, pull the bush out of the bottom and slide the new bush back in. I would guess I would need to remove the steering wheel and switches but what else holds it in place?

Is there a bush down there? I never realised...

I've taken mine out many times lately. The procedure is:

1. Steering wheel off
2. Screws holding the indicator/wiper lever assembly out
3. Steering cowling bottom section off
4. Disconnect ignition switch and other wiring blocks
5. Remove indicator/wiper lever assembly
6. Remove pinch bolts from UJ at base of steering column and from ignition switch / column housing
7. Remove steering column

Refitting is the reverse of removal (a la Haynes).

Let me know what you find at the UJ end - I wasn't even aware there was a bush in there. I have play in my steering column as well, so any tips would be handy.
