Cylinder head oil leak

Hello all

Im not sure on how to proceed with this issue next.

Last sat I had my head gasket replaced due to a fairly hefty oil leak (aprox 100mls oil in 5 min tick over).

My "family" who we have used with great success for 20+ years assured me that the head gasket was the issue (oddly enough havent heard from him since he took the £150+ labour cash!).

When facing the front of the engine the leak is directly to the top left of the block....you can see a steady stream whilst on tick over...no improvement at all!

So what would you guys suggest I should do next? Ill do it myself in future...no point paying someone else a good wedge of cash to remove 20 bolts!

He's an old skool mechanic so I would think the head was re torqued to spec...or maybe not?!?

Pain in the arse really as I was quite enjoying my new lower strut brace and now cant drive anywhere.

Cheers

Liam

It's highly possible I'm being dumb here, but I'm not quite sure from your description if you mean the oil is leaking from between the engine block and the head or from between the head and cam cover? Any chance of a photo to show it exactly?

its a big ass leak between the block and head at about head bolt 10 (top left) going from the haynes manual.

Rocker gasket is dry.

Ill try to get a picture of the area but the space to view it from is only an inch wide.

Thanks for the reply.

quick update...had the rocker cover off yesterday to check the torque on the head and for the first time ever a nice piece of white cream cheese was waiting for me in the rocker cover. didn't get the riveta out but gave it a good clean. re tourqued the head bolts to spec and leak still persists. head skim next i guess?

ide take the head off and have a look at the mating surfaces. could be a piece of old gasket holding it apart enough to leak oil.
another thing ive seen in the past is a severely skimmed head being spaced with two head gasket which is a no no, that can also cause leaks.
might even be a cheap head gasket maybe?
if you take the head off you will be able to see the oil trace where it has come from.

It was an elring head gasket that was used as a replacement.

Ill get the head off tomorrow...my dad suggests using engineers blue on glass to note high or low spots on the head.

Ill take note of any leaks on the gasket. The fact that she was cream in the rocker cover suggests an water leak aswell as an oil leak. she didnt have the water leak prior to the gasket being changed.

Are there any signs of mayo anywhere else in the oil, dipstick for example? If an engine is only run for short periods like I'm guessing yours is at the moment, then you get condensation build up in the top of the engine as it never gets hot enough to drive the moisture out.

Something else that might be worth thinking about is are there any restrictions in the oilways going to and from the head causing the oil to find it's way out between the head and the block. You might be able to check that by taking the cam cover off and checking the feed and return oilways and turning the engine over on the starter to pump some oil around.

Started dismantling the head today and upon draining the water I noticed it had an oily sheen to it.

It alsways had a little leak but got a hell of alot worse when the new cam was fitted.
