Scirocco Register

Hi, I have to change the rack on my Mk1 Scirocco so I bought a new one from a popular website which was advertised as being for a Mk1 golf. I decided to also buy a quick rack 2.9 and fit it into the new rack before fitting the lot. Problem is that the pinion bearing is too small. Don't understand why? Any sugestions? Is it the wrong rack( I thought they were all the same) or have quaife sent me the wrong bearing?

Do a search on the ClubGTi forum as this problem came up when they had a group buy a few years ago. Apparently, there can be two different sizes of bearing.

Thanks Pete, It appears that someone on here experienced the same problem some years ago but he managed to source a 20x35x7 bearing (lucky!!) which has proved impossible for me despite hours of research/calls. I am unaware as to how other people got around this problem as I am not registered on any other forums. I have considered my options at this point. Either 1.) attempt to remove the 35mm bearing from the original pinion. 2.) Manufacture a spacer to go around the 32mm bearing or 3.) Give up and return the quick rack. It is the gap around the bearing where it sits in the rack that is disconcerting. Any input would be much welcome!!

Update on the conundrum- Someone kindly suggested that it was in fact the rack itself which was a reproduction and had a larger bearing. I have since sourced an original item and will install the quick rack soon. I will let you know how it goes!
