Been speaking to a VW tuning place near me and they reckon the pierbergs when set up properly are better and more fuel efficient and dont need touching for years once done right.
Also found this place that sells reconditioned ready tuned pierbergs for £160.

My dads been a mechanic for the last 40 years and he hates the peribergs because he says they are too complicated.
But i spose if you do understand them they are a clever peice of tech for theyre time.

the weber is a very primitive carb. the only reason most of use dislike the pieburg is that it breaks (often due to being clogged up with rusty bits from the tank - when did you last replace your fuel filter?) or because longer standing rocco owners have told us we dislike it. when running right (and that is the important word) they are vastly superior, and are able to adjust the fuelling for a wide range of engine conditions far more accurately than the weber can. most of us can't be bothered to learn how to set them up and the weber only has a couple of adjustments you'll ever need to touch - mixture and throtle stop - so someone with relatively little knowledge can get them running passably
yes, when i had a mk2 i did junk the pierburg in favour of a weber, but not coz i thought it was crap. it was cheaper to do that and get a weber lpg mixer than it was to get a pierberg lpg mixer
