Scirocco Register

We have a Pierburg 2e2.... But stay with me for a moment.

The car (1.8 gt 1989) has run great for over 2 years of ownership, but has had signs of fuel leaking from the carb for some time. It began to pink (think that's what you call it... Juddering on acceleration) recently so took it to a garage to be looked at whilst having other work done. The mechanic told us that the following needs doing:

Waxstat sticking
Accelerator pump leaking fuel
Pre-heat pipe split
Rocker gasket leaking

How easy are all these things? I have done a cover gasket on my golf mk4 which was easy enough, is the rocco as easy?

Also, I thought the waxstat made the revs rise randomly if knackered, ours has never done that.

Rocker gasket is dead easy, eight 10mm nuts, though you need to remove the airbox first, but that's just one 10mm nut and undoing the clips, then just clean up the mating faces, don't forget to use the new little plastic half-moon strips at each end.

I'll leave the other things to the experts, though I think the pipe is easy enough too.

Ref the rocker gasket, buy the MK3 Golf rubber 1 piece affair (part number in the section above), you will need to change the studs but much, much better.
Don't forget to re-attach the earth strap.

Fuel pump is just a bolt off and bolt on a new one, easy, just look in the Haynes!

The pre-heat pipe can be bought from GSF reasonably cheap'

Pierburg, great carb if working okay, but not many people know how to repair, try an old skool VW expert.

Thanks for the help and encouragement. My next question was going to be which of the many gaskets, but I'll check the FAQs above for the rubber one thanks!

I'll be checking GSF and ECP for the others. Will be happy if I sort it, or at least the mrs will be to save a few quid!

Ok, new rubber gasket and bolts fitted today. Easy job as said, longest job being cleaning gunk off here and there to make it easier to check if it's all good over the next few days.

I've noticed that the fuel hose from the fuel pump behind the radiator is starting to crack, and the oil breather hose that I replaced last year is already shot ... Where's the best place for these? VW were either loads of dosh or no longer available, can't remember which, and the one I bought online felt like liquorice... I think it actually was!

Lastly, what should the idle speed be when cold? Ours is 2000rpm (too high??) then drops to 1000 when warm and stays there, so don't think my waxstat is sticking.

Idle speed when warm should be +/-900 RPM.

Do you have a part number for the hoses you need? I have found the best site to check availibilty is the VW Classic parts site, the German one!

Applogies for hijacking this thread but I need to replace my rocker cover gasket before christmas if possible ..Want to change for the rubber one as I also heard elsewhere the cork one's perish quickly but have a couple of questions before I go ahead and buy the wrong parts..


1- so a rubber gasket for a mk3 golf will definitly fit then? please forgive my blindness if I am being, but where is the 'section above' so I can locate the part number please!

2- re the studs, do you mean I'll need to buy new bolts? and if so any ideas where I could get hold of em?

The studs come with the gasket, so check they are in box when you get one, to remove the studs get 2 of the nuts you took off to remove the cover and screw one half way down the stud then screw the other nut on and lock together with 2 spanners, you should then be able to undo the stud using a spanner on the lower nut.
I also found that I have to check the tightness of the nuts every now and then, I use a 10mm socket on a extension bar without any thing else and do it up by hand, I don't have a torque wrench which goes a low as recommended by VW.

Part number for the gasket is 026 198 025C. If you get it from a VW dealer it should come with the new studs in the box as stated.
The method for getting the old studs out is correct, using the old nuts but worthwhile having some new nuts available as it can strip the threads on the nuts.
Use plenty of WD40 or suchlike and maybe have some heat close by just in case they are well tight and you really don't want to snap one!
