DX cam same number, but in 1984 there was a revised G grind cam, 049 109 101 G

AMAZING!! Thanks so much, I trawled through Google all day and couldn't find those numbers.. Now I can spin those 10milli nuts off the cam cover studs and and confirm in my own head that I don't already have a GTI cam, then I can go shopping for some speed parts

Is there much difference between the G and N grind cams? Its just a hunch but I reckon they have the same lift&duration but a different ramp angle to compensate for the differences in bore, stroke, rod ratio, valve area:displacement ratio and breathing between the two lumps..but I might have just made that up in my head without any proof...

I would guess the difference is that before 1984 the head uses solid shims and after 1984 hydrolic shims.

I had it in my head that the changeover from shimmed lifter to hydraulic lifter was in '86?

the DX2 had hydraulic lifters, at this stage it was still solid lifters

I pulled the cam cover off to have a nosey at the cam thats currently in there and the markings on it are;

"W" on 1, the VW/Audi symbol on 2, "049C" on 3 and "WTR" on 4..

Does this identify it as a certain part no or some particular grind? Is there a way I could find out the specs of the cam to compare it to the EG/DX jobbie I'm looking to throw in there as short term measure before the 16v goes in?
