Scirocco Register

Just coming to the end of a big rustproofing session on my Mk2. I've used Bilt Hamber Dynax S50 - very easy to use their aerosols with the long lance!

I've managed to do the front chassis legs, front crossmember, box sections under the front floor pan, inner rear arches, inner rear quarters, rear axle mounts, rear chassis legs and rear valance!

Onto the sills... I think I'm going to peel the carpets back inside the car and drill three or four 10mm holes each side to get the lance in. Will this gain access to the whole sill cavity section or is there an inner and outer sill? Has anyone ever seen a Scirocco cut in half?! Would be a lot easier this way than having to remove the body kit to repeat the process on the outside!

Any tips from someone who's done this would be much appreciated!

Also, are there any box sections or rust traps that I have missed?

There should already be a hole in the sill to do this job there should be a blanking gromit fitted at the front of the sill (by the door hinge end) remove the gromit and you get access from there and at the back you can take the rear door card things by the rear seat off (cant think what to call them!) and you can see along the rear of the sill to add wax in there.

As far as I know the sill is just one box section, (the bit under the the door) and at the back you can see the bottom of it when you take the rear door card off.
There will also be another gap between the plastic body kit and the outer sill but I don't thing most people wax in there. I'll try and find a photo of what I'm on about, it will make things alot clearer.

I've had the door cards off at the back and waxed down there. Right at the bottom, there's an elongated hole that I put the lance through and I'd say I was able to wax the first 12-18 inches along the sill section that's under the doors. It certainly started to drip out that section. I'll try from the front to go rearwards and perhaps I'll then only need to drill one hole inbetween these two locations to get total coverage.

If you could get a photo, that would be much appreciated :)

It seems I was wrong about a hole already being there, I had a look at another members project and the Mk2 seems not to have any holes there.

On My Mk1 Scirocco I have a hole near the accelerator pedal about level with the start of the heel pad on the car mat in the photo so you can wax form the front and at the back via the door card.

Also might be worth putting some wax in the bottom of the doors (take the door cards off) as the rain is meant to run through there, so clean it out first then put some wax in the door put make sure you clear the drain holes as you want to water to get out some how!

Be careful of the plastic door membrane behind the door card if its damaged it will let rain into the car. So any damage/holes it might be worth changing it / repairing it.

if you can, i'd be tempted to wax there too. some cars do seem to like going rusty under the bodykit. be warned though, if you remove the kit you may find tinworm

Did my sills this afternoon. Well, I wax injected Bilt Hamber inside of them. Very easy to access. Simply remove the kick plate and there's five suitable sized and equidistantly spaced holes for inserting a lance. I put the contents of one can (750ml) into each side. Of course a lot dripped out but that's a good thing.

One tip, remove your rear door cards either side of the rear seat and protect your seatbelt reel with a carrier bag unless you want wax over your clothes the next time you put your belt on!

i used to have an mgb roadster,the sills are renowned for rotting away,they are built in 3 section box design,when i cut them out and replaced them i wax oiled them but i noticed that they had inbuilt drainage holes,so i thought if you design something that lets water out it must stand that you know its coming in,be it by rain or by metal condensation,after sticking a damp meter probe into one of the drainage holes it read 0.8 per cent water to every 100th of air,this varied upto 1.7 moisture to every 100th of air.so i filled the whole sill with non flamable expanding foam.i then checked it against the other sill which was non foam filled over 3 months,the untreated sill had gone up to 2.4 moisture to 100th air and the treated sill read 0.1 percent.i did the non treated one as well.i dont no if this has been done before but no moisture could only mean no rust.
