ive finally got round to extracting a dx cam from an old engine to put into my ex head only to find theres some major pitting on lobes 6 and 7
each pit is just before and after lobe peaks and look about a 1mm in diameter.
does this mean the cam is scrap?

The guide to a used cam being reuseable or not is that all the lobes should have much the same surface finish and that finish should be matt(ish). Bright shiney lobe tips with grooves or raised lines indicates heavy wear and worse will happen quite soon!
Pits can be caused in manufacturing process but tend to be rare. If the cam looks looks generally healthy I would not be too concerned about the odd pit. Lots of pitting is bad news as it points to a problem.
The right way to do it is new cam AND followers and I`m always amazed that some engines will tolerate the reuse of used cams and followers.
Given the above (and if you are no expert and times are hard) - if the parts look in good condition it`s worth a try. If you have doubts, you are probably right so chuck them!
Good luck, John
