mk1 scirocco leaks........help wanted.....

Post by malmac »

Evening folks,

I'm just ready to install my new sound insulation and then interior when i though i'd do a leak test just in case !!

Good job i did, it's like a watering can, it's got leaks to the following:

1) o/s/f foot well, seems to be dripping from that side panel between front wheel arch and door, which that separate piece of carpet is stuck to. (but in my case it's off as interior stripped)
2) o/s/r boot area, water is dripping off inside of rear light lens but the light isn't leaking, it's must be dripping onto it as only leaks when i pour water around the top of hatchback.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I would guess the rear leak is coming from the gasket that seals around the rear light, remove the rear light (6 nuts) clean the gasket and check its seated properlly.

The front leak might be a missing gromet in the engine bay or worse case a rusty hole under the front window seal in the corner, you can some times lift the seal a bit it see if you can see anything.

i thought it would be the light gasket too but i've squirted water directly onto that from the outside and it doesn't let any water through, it leaks only when water is poured on roof area, so i'm thinking it's dripping down the hatchback channel. The rubber sleeve in which the wiper wires are housed at the top of hatchback area is perished so i'm wondering if water could drip through the holed rubber seal then down on to the rear light inside car.

Then again, it could well be the light gasket that only lets water in at a certain angle.

i'll do some more investigating over the weekend, thanks for your help.
