...not re-spray ;)

having had a good look at the chooco rocco over the past few weeks, i've come to the conclusion that although the colour is lovely, the finish is absolutly shocking with bubbles everywhere from trapped water. car was probably resprayed during damp weather.

anywho, i think im going to repaint her, but in a satin colour. so probably with a roller or spray can.

just cant decide on a colour. i think satin orange would look really good, but also love the pale blue and battleship greys. the satin orange pictured below is certainly winning so far!




now, i've never painted a full car before properly...(there was this one time when i had a spare tin of nato green and a mate had a polo 6n he wanted to scrap in a week, so we gave it a good coat. turned out alright to be honest...ish)


so does anyone have any tips or links to tips on how to paint a car and get a good finish with a satin paint? either from a tin or spray.

If painting with a roller from a can I would have thought the thinner the paint the easier its going to be to get a smooth finish, but obviously needing more coats. Whether you can buy it thinner or thin it down yourself I dont know I am not a paint expert I am afraid.

And my vote goes for the orange.

What I can tell you is that that paint's like pudding!You'll be needing lots of thinners to spray it! (We rollered my mate's LDV Pilot with it - not thinned - last summer - nato green)

yeah i'll most likely be rollering it due to limited space.

i think the general consensus seems to be the following.

1. repair any bodywork which is needed
2. key up bodywork with 400 grit
3. clean the bodywork with a rag and white spirit or other pre-paint cleaner
4. mix up the paint to around 70:30 with thinners if rollering, or until the paint resembles something slightly thicker than water. be careful not to introduce air into the mix, as this will become a problem later.
5. fully load the roller with paint then expel the excess to help reduce air bubbles
5. give a light coat over the panel.
6. if bubbles appear, then either thin the paint more or using a clean dry roller, lightly roll over the top of the surface which will pop the bubbles. only use the rollers weight, no added pressure.
7. allow to dry, then wet sand with 800 grit
8. clean and dry the paint again
9. repeat steps 5 to 7, working up in grit gradually between coats
10. after 5/6 coats a good even coverage should be seen
11. allow to cure for about 30 days before attempting to polish and buff the paint if a gloss finish is wanted.


seems relativly simple. When im back from holiday in 2 weeks im going to spend the entire week painting the hell out of her ready for a retro day at the local, down at the harlyn inn near padstow in cornwall. will be a fun day out if anyone is in the area

Things to consider are:-

Once welding or any bare metal exposed you should fill, etch prime and possibly use filler primer. Key up the good paint with Scotch type pads/sandpaper figure out which grades in guides I forget..

Consider any high spots can easily be sanded right through to bare metal by accident when doing your layers.

Drying time? Where are you doing this? Is it a clean dust free environment? or the best you can create, weather/moisture?

How quickly can you start to key/sand the coats with the drying time? and consider grades of paper? as you'll find there will be different opinion with various people.

The fact that your doing a satin finish should make it easier but my experience is that if you miss 1% of a 100% process it can end up being poor. Find a system that works for you and try not to cut corners/ loose patience/ compromise . Preparation before paint is really important using you hands helps indicate smoothness by sense of touch. Also knowing any issues that can arise.

If paint does run it can be dealt with when dry don't try to wipe it off when wet!

Use tack cloths after panel wipe, sticky cloths that take away any other bits.

As for colour, something that matches the interior/ engine bay?

engine pay is half gold, half red, interior is mostly gold, with under the carpets being red. why not add another colour to the mix....

she'll be done in the garage at home. im not expecting a perfect finish to be honest but as she's no way a show car, but something to have fun in and enter into navigation rallies and hopefully hillclimbs. so im not too fussed if it all goes wrong and i need to start again. treating it more as an exercise in learning than a need for a perfect finish haha. i'm also hoping that if i aim for a matt finish rather than satin, my margin for error is vastly improved!

the only worry is that a bright colour like orange will highlight all the flaws in her bodywork, whereas a matt black should hide a lot of the small dings etc. but matt black has been done to death and i kind of fancy something lairy.

just bought a load of primer, thinners, rollers, wet n dry paper and paint.

went for this in the end: pastel orange, RAL2003, in a satin finish.

A gun metal grey would have been lovely on it.

Don't use white spirit dude, it will leave a slight silicone on the surface.
Best stuff to use is pre-paint wipe 5ltrs comes out around 20 quid. I use it all the time on pre-finished surfaces.
Not sure if you can buy it from a car parts shop, but you can get it in a paint shop

i bought some thinners to use to, erm, thin the paint. would these be okay to clean up the areas after wet sanding and before re-painting? it seems i didnt receive the primer i bought, so i have got to chase that up. ill see if they can supply the pre-paint wipe at the same time :)


grey would have looked brilliant, but if slightly messy would just look like a car always in its pre-paint stages. so avoided that onbe. plus, if im going to repaint it, i want it lairy! haha.
