My 1989 Scirocco GT - The Story So Far

hi everyone, i just joined the forum so thought id give you some background.

last summer i decided it was about time to buy my first car. id been driving for years but just my dads cars and the works van. i wanted something i could work on, and learn more about cars ( i have worked in car shops since i was 16 but never had much experience with working on cars - im 23 now). i had always liked old VWs so i started looking around. i picked up a 1989 1.8 GT with 85k on the clock for 400 quid! I picked it up in glasgow and drove it back to Aberdeen (really enjoyed the feel of the car..apart from the slight rattle - ill get to that) and parked up outside my work. after my shift i jumped in my new car and reversed out of the parking space, into 1st gear and then... **CLUNK**....i had no drive what so ever! i looked under the car and the drive shaft was on the floor.... that explained the rattle! not a good start!

This didnt put me off though, i fixed the drive shaft and while i was there did the front suspension arms too (they had seen better days!). The car drove nicely after that and i was ecstatic with my purchase! then MOT time comes about and theres more work to be done!! after a few retests i got it past its MOT, and its driving better than ever! there is still lots of work to be done to it but i will get there when funds allow me to!

i love driving my scirocco!! and i love working on it too! its not the best rocco out there but with some time and patience it will get there one day! all in all i would say it was a very good purchase indeed!

work done so far...
brake pads, discs and shoes replaced all round.
brake pipes and hoses replaced all round.
some small wiring issues fixed(never again hopefully).
front suspension arms, bushes, and ball joints replaced.
track rod ends replaced and laser alignment.
wheel bearings replaced all round .
O/S drive shaft replaced.
Plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm all replaced.
all filters replaced and oil change.
car has now been resprayed (every panel except the roof) and is looking good!

work to be done in the near future (a year or so)...
first on the list is to find this damn leak and get it fixed!
bumpers need resprayed and the exterior trim needs some attention.
then comes the fun things... firstly a brand new weber carb with manual choke conversion
some nice shiny new alloys...im thinking some 16" Calibre Vintage
get some coilovers and drop it 30 - 40mm!
then to start work on the interior!

thanks for reading, and i look forward to using this forum!

i got some mates rates on the go for my respray, got it for £370 not including paint. paint was about 110 i think. this is a massive saving but i helped the boy out with stripping the car down and masking!

i bought the second scirocco for £250 for spares and repairs. it had a gearbox with only 10k on it which has now been removed! i took it out a couple of days ago and discovered that the clutch is pretty much brand new aswell! :D

also it had breaded fuel lines which have been taken out and i also took the engine out to have a play around with (i wanted a new toy!)!! so overall a good purchase!!
