Handbrake lever's popped out...

Hopefully this photo gives an indication of what I've stupidly done to my handbrake:

I may have pulled on the lever too enthusiastically, or else the lever was on its way out anyway, but as it stands I now can't apply the handbrake.

Are others familiar with my problem? Is it a matter of an hour's work to someone like me with a relatively limited level of technical nous, or am I better off taking it down to my friendly man at the local garage?

TIA.

Looks like a broken left hand cable.

Agreed. Try pulling on just that cable and see if it pulls through or feels noticeably looser than the other (which should be tight). If it's loose, the cable's probably snapped, and you'll need to replace it. Not too bad a job if I recall correctly, with the exception of reattaching the cable end inside the drum!

Yeah thirded. It looks like the left hand one finally gave up the ghost when you pulled the lever up.

Eh? Looking at the picture, I would have said its the right-hand cable that has snapped. The LH is clearly still in tension.
Or am I being daft?

Passenger side snapped, left side of car when looking forward as per normal convention.
