What are you comparing it to?
At what speeds does it feel heavy?
If the answer to the first question is, "A modern car with power steering," then you probably have your answer.
If the answer to the second question is, "At slow speeds and when I'm parking," then see above.
At normal road speeds you will be able to feel what's being transmitted from the road much more than a modern car with power steering, but the steering shouldn't be heavy.
Obviously, if you've fitted wider-than-standard wheels, the normal steering effort required will be increased.

If it's gotten heavier than usual your front tyre pressures may be too low.

Tyre pressures (as above) ...or knackered top mounts can make a difference too.
Other than that, Man UP!

Tracking and camber affect it too... And the type of tyre - Uniroyal rain tyres for example - make the steering VERY heavy!

wider than standard tyres fitted will make it heavier. as will grippy tyres, incorrect steering setup, smaller than standard steering wheel, seized top mounts, seized steering joints and not enough shredded wheat. no PAS, it's never gonna be particularly light
