Scirocco Register

Hi,

My mk1 scirocco dash has been speckled with primer during it's re-spray, and can't seem to remove it - didn't want to use paint stripper on it - could i??
I was thinking of taking it out and spraying it matt black.

1) has anybody tried this - do you think it would look naff ??
2) how difficult is it to remove dash??

How bad is the overspray? Lightly running a stanley blade over the dash (be careful not to dig the blade into the dash) can remove overspray. Also a rag lightly dipped in thinners should remove it also. Don't soak the rag as you don't want the thinners to attack the vinyl of the dash.

Dash is easy to remove, two 8mm bolts at each of the ends, one screw behind the glovebox, and if I remember rightly one screw next to the cigar lighter. Clips at the back of the dash at the bulkhead.

Your clocks are held in with one screw next to the radio cubby hole. Unscrew the speedo cable and the wiring for the binnacle and the light switch pull off with tabs. The switches above the radio are held in with tabs, withdrawn to the rear. Heater sliders and switch pull out.

Have only ever tried those vinyl spray cans on headlining on a Golf, that worked ok but I wouldn't know if it would look good on a dash, those paint tend have a matt finish.

My dash was beyond help, tried everything on it - so i went for the removal option.

As you've mentioned, it was quite straight forward to do and i've actually sprayed it with Halfords matt black ( i hate shiny dashboards) .

I'm due to put it back in at the weekend but it's a lot better than it was, the grey/silver trim was masked off too so fingers crossed. not sure sure how long it will last though with the sun and cleaning etc.
