Clutch pulling through modifications?

Ive been reading on here about the clutch cable pulling through, is there any solutions to fix this?
Ive had a look at my car on the bulkhead today and there seems no way it can pull through.

Sorry, but I couldn't help laughing.

Everytime you press the clutch peddle the bulkhead flexes. Eventually all this flexing will fatigue the bulkhead enough that it splits (think of a ring pull on a can and what happens when you bend it back and forth) and there goes your clutch.

If yours hasn't gone then I suggest that strengthening it before it happens is your best bet, either make a plate to cover the area or buy a Golf Mk1 bulkhead plate (it's better than the one for the Scirocco). Either way it will have the effect of spreading the load on the bulkhead as well as strengthening it.

Maybe not now, but most will through time ... it appears to be one of those unwritten laws!

As for the repair kits GSF used to sell them, but I seem to remember someone saying last year they'd stopped. Might be worth giving them a shout as an alternative.

The whole bulkhead fractures so you can see it from both sides.

If you are lucky enough that it hasn't happened to you then prevention is better than cure.

Has anyone got a picture of where their clutch cable is routed and goes through the bulkhead in the engine bay please?
I cant find a good picture on google.

Third picture down. On the injection model there is a clip that holds the clutch cable where the swirl pot is, but you can see the general routing of the cable.

Regarding the flexing I was talking about, ben posted this last week.

Mine pulled through about 3 weeks ago. Some previous owner had bodged the job and made a right mess of it. Consequently, i had to cut out all the old metal, about 6"x4" in size. I made up a plate out of some good quality steel sheet i have, then i welded a repair plate on to the top of the sheet steel i'd cut out. I then got a pro welder in to weld the 6"x4" in place(did a fantastic job, much better than i could ever wish to weld). I should have taken some pics really as its a great job, very strong and has the bonus of been two plates thick. I filled the slight cavities between the 2 plates with JB weld, just to stop any possibility of flexing between them.
Then i put on a rust preventitive primer, then a couple of coats of Tornado red. Finally, when it had dried properly, i lathered it up inside and out with waxoyl. It should last a bloody long time now. Job done.

Hi Sean, if you don't me asking, how much did the welder charge you? I will need to go down the same road as you and would be good to know the costs for comparison.

Ahhh yes. Theres a little story behind the price he charged. Initially, he intended using his "all singing, all dancing gas welder on my car but, when he'd got it all set up he found he'd run out of gas! So, he asked what i'd used and if he could try it out. So, he welded it up using my Clarke 105en gasless jobby. When he'd finished he was quite impressed with how it had performed, even went as far as to say he might get one himself.
In answer to your question, he was going to charge £50. But, as he had used my gear he charged £30.
