Hello,
Ive been into the older vw's for a while then went to old bmw's now im back with a scirocco. I didnt intend on getting one but when i went to look at the example i knew this was the car for me.

All of the vw's i had before were Polo's, 9 of them! Early mk2 coupe s upto my mk3 1341 g40 and every spec inbetween!
This is my first golf chassis car, but coming from a polo background I have never really wanted to own a golf, so the rocco is perfect.

I havnt had it long but its comfier than a polo and im getting around 45mpg on my trip to work which is excellent  so its here to stay.

I dont have any pics before i cleaned and polished it but it was badly faded, and still is... :( Im going to have to borrow a friends mop and paint renovation products in an attempt to get it up to the standard i would like.

Here are some photos i took whilst doing some work on it earlier

When i was looking at the car i had gathered plenty of knowledge from this forum so i checked there was no terminal rust on the filler neck. I went out today to sand it back and coat it with hammerite to protect it further

Image

Image

While i was there i though i should attend to the small rust patch by the filler neck before it gets bad and needs welding. I have no spray paint atm but i used a red touch up pen to protect it after the rust treatment. Its not a great finish of colour match but its also not permanent, so i dont mind.

I used this stuff to treat the rust and would fully recommend it!

Image

I covered behind in hammerite to protect it untill i clean out the arches and re underseal them and after i had cleaned the rubber drain catcher thing and put i back together it looks loads better and most importantly no rust!

Image

Image

My sticker says 98ron for fuel. Does anyone know if this is true? V-power isnt cheap!

Also did the towing eye and did a quick clean of the parts in the arch while i was there.

Thats all for now,

Shaun, all Mk2 models run on unleaded, though the grades do seem to differ somewhat.

The inside filler cap on my GT, which is the basic model, specifically shows standard unleaded as being the preferred minimum ...

Image

However, I believe the 1.8s and fuel-injected cars ought to be run on 98 RON as your sticker says.

:beers:

Thanks for confirming that, will be v-power from now on then!

My grandmother's '88 Golf GL 1.8 (which I now own), was "modified" by the supplying dealer to run on standard unleaded... which basically means they adjusted the timing to stop it pinking and put a sticker in the engine bay to note the change to the car's set-up.

That's your other option (although I'm sure most people just keep things as they are and chuck normal unleaded in).

They probably do, but I don't think that's a good option though, I've tried that and there is a definite performance impact using normal unleaded on a car set up for 98 RON.

mine is a 1993 car and it says 98 ron but when i used this the spark plugs got all sooted up and it ran like a pig.

switched to normal unleaded and ran just fine

might be something to do with the weber carb i was thinking?

Welcome to forum mate :good:

Looks a nice solid Scirocco. That rust converter I believe is the best and you don't have anything serious there.

Someone will have no doubt fitted seats like these somehow if you have a good search on here and even further afield.

Small update:

The car developed an issue with coolant loss this weekend. Long story short it turns out the header tank has been replaced in the past with an aftermarket part. The thread on this didnt match the thread on the cap very well and wasnt sealing, alowing the pressure and some coolant out.

Thanks to Volksmagic in oldsbury sorted me with a genuine header tank + cap and that long hose that goes to the rad.

Also fitted my near rear washer bottle and cap, thanks to CPT Custom for the parts :beers:

Changd the car onto its original scala wheels this weekend as the ronals had a very bald inner edge.
Going to go for some 195/50/15 t1r's and raise it up a bit compared to the 185/45 no grip nankangs!

Got some pictures before i put the scala wheels on courtesy of my gf 8-)

Havnt had chance to fit the new suspension parts yet as the car decided it didnt like me anymore and broke down.

Im still not exactly sure what was wrong, see the engine section if youre interested as to the process of what i was checking etc.

Anyway, the car now has a new:

Fuel pump (Noisier than the old one!)
Fuel pump relay
Fuel filter
Dizzy cap
Rotor arm
Ht leads
Spark plugs

Got more on tomorrow aswell, will be changing:

Cambelt + tensioner
Waterpump
Aux belt
Cam seal

It did give me a chance to use the camera on my new samsung galaxy s2, its my first smart phone so im still getting used to it all.

Image
Image

The old dizzy cap and rotor arm wernt in great shape! Not quite sure how the rotor arm got damaged like it is :dunno:

New stuff

Image
Image

I then went through plenty of fault finding as i didnt have a new fuel pump at the time and got one after. I took the seats out and the carpets up so i could trace all of the wiring for damage etc. At least ive had the chance to bin all of that foam sound deading, its surprisingly heavy when its all together, got to be 15kg+.

How much fun do you think i had with this lot

Image
Image

Made worse by some previous alarm. Fitted with chocblocks! Why dont people use solder and heatshrink! Its much neater, i will be addressing whats left of the chocblocks at a later date with the soldering iron. Ive managed to remove the entire wiring loom for the alarm, it just went to nowhere in the engine bay and removing hasnt affecting anything else on the car.

Image
Image

After checking just about every wiring connection in the whole car for voltage/continuity etc i still had the fuel pump fuse popping on startup.
I felt like giving in the towel as the above had too me the best part of 4 hours or so. Good job its been sunny this weekend!

I got up this morning and went out for another go after a trip to gsf for a fuel filter and pump.

I disconnected the lower electrical connection first (7mm spanner)
Then the rear fuel pipe. I couldnt get to the front one as you need a 19mm spanner for the union nut and a 17mm spanner to hold at the pump end.

Image
Image
Image

At this point as access is rubbish i found it easier to undo the handbrake cable mounts and the fuel pump mounts to lower it down.

Image
Image

It should come out as a complete unit with some fiddling around the pipes. Then it comes apart like this.

Image

Old vs new

Image

As the bracket was looking shabby and rusty, i coated it the rust buster converter i have then painted it up black, cleaned out all the rubber etc aswell.

Image

Fitted it all back on, but beware just how fiddly it is to get the handbrake mount bolt back in! I was under the car for ages getting very frustrated :hehe:

Onto the fuel filter, made sure i had new crush washers and some gasket sealant to prevent any leaks (Also used this for the fuel pump connections). Hylomar blue is brilliant if you havnt used it before. Plus i get it free from work!

Image

I removed the battery for better access, takes 2 minutes and is definatly worth it.

Image
Image

I still had my problem after all of this! I jut bridged the fuse connections with a wire to make sure my new pump was working and it started. I re-checked all of the relay connections with a voltmeter and the lift pump connections. Then it started fine, and no fuse blown  Not sure what was different after i checked everything but i dont care, it works!

Also got a pic of how i mounted my harness. Ive put some corrado seats in the rocco that i had spare, the seating position is much better with the rado seats! I wanted to run my harness but as the seats sit so low youve got no chance of getting a harness eye in there on the seat. Ive got 2 eyes in, one where the rear seat belt would be and one on the sill where the front seat belt would be. For the seat attatchment i did some thinking and come up with the mount from the rear seatbelt. My rear seatbelt was the non inertia type, which look messy and are generally crap so i had no problems destroying them to fit my harness. Heres a pic fitted, works perfect and looks like it could almost be factory (I think so anyway :hehe: )

Thats all for now, going to bed!
