12k 1978 gls

Post by mark83 »

Been on here a while and thought it was about time I showed you my scirocco .In my never ending search for a ts I stumbled across this car not really what I was looking for but too good to turn down and it was local.

It's a 1978 gls in colibri green last on the road in 1985 with a total mileage of 12k ,picture's as I found it .

bought as a non runner due to the owner draining the water and the brakes seized solid .

Even though it was low mileage being stood up so long has caused a few problems.Had to drain the fuel tank ,replace the rear brake cylinders ( wheels had never been removed still had paint from the factory on the nuts). The pipe on the end of the fuel pick up had melted into a blob which caused fuel starvation ,also had to clean up the fuel gauge sender as this was gumed up and stuck so reading wrong.
Cambelt change ,rebuild water pump due to leaking as the seals had dryed out.Tool a while to source a early waterpump.

Unused spare wheel

It's been in storage for the last year while i finish my mk1 golf , it still doesn't run right the tank needs draining again and the inside sealing .Then the carb needs stripping down and cleaning and then it will be ready for a mot.

I must also thank someone on here who posted up the link to it on retro cars forum :good:

As a bit of a Mk 1 nutter (myself)
For the last 20 odd years I always figured that the old "DBC 36" or whatever Storm was, the ultimate Mk 1 in the UK (Green one that used to be in all the old mags)

Then Marshal racks up with his TS and it makes you think!

Then this? a definate power-shift in the Mk1 world..

:) I bet that was Stu, he helped out with the interior clean , he has a caddy now which came in handy as he picked up a mk1 scirocco roof with me the other week.

I remember that storm for me the ultimate uk mk1 was the silver ts which has gone oversea's (wish I had had the money when it first appeared on here ) .

Barrys old storm is alive and well - (SADLY Barry passed away 3 years ago) - and its now on different plates, usually appears at stanford with new owner Alex.

this gls is simply stunning though - assume an invite to exhibit at the NEC Classic when we get a stand sorted. :ok:
