As per the title, thinking of using an 02A box with the new engine but I'd much rather keep the rod-change so I dont have to cut any holes to run the cables through..

Not really, the mechanism at the gearbox end is very different and the casing wouldn't have any mount points for pivots needed. I considered an O2A box when I was rebuilding my car as I had a Seat 16V box which has a cable clutch just sat around plus shifter and mounts for a mk1 chassis. I ended up using a Mk3 Golf 8v GTI O2O box as it made life simple but gives me better fuel economy than the original.

What are you intending doing with your car?

Thanks for the response Tim, the info about the mechanism as it joins the box is very valuable info : )

While the car is being painted (proper bare metal, glass out job) I'm building the silliest 8v I can get away with, 2.0, lightened/balanced bottom end (fly, rods, pistons, int. shaft) lots of headwork, big valves, big cam, etc etc etc and I'm pretty sure my 020 won't last 5 minutes, plus it only has a 190mm clutch so I was thinking rod changed 02A for the bigger clutch, stronger gearsets on the input, lay, and output shafts, plus the lovely little wavetrac diff thats in there...

I did some googling last night and it turns out that there was a Seat 02A with cable clutch and rod change but there was a bit of disagreement on what the codes for those boxes were...so I need to spend a good few hours trawling through Seat websites to try and find the code I need! lol! And when I'ver tracked the bugger down I can move the diff from the old box to the new one, bolt it up to my engine and drop the whole lot in!

Should be a fair bit more fun to drive with an extra 500cc and an extra 90-100bhp!

I've found what I need! there's a company in germany that manufacture the linkages I need to make 02A compatible with rod change! details are here http://www.clausvonessen.de/pi38/pd648.html

Now to wait for the postman to deliver..

I'm using an o2o with my 2L valver and the only problem I had with my last gearbox was that the diff bearings started to get noisy. I think the box had done about 150,000 miles by that point though . The mk3 box I'm using now has the bigger input shaft and clutch although I couldn't tell you off the top of my head what size they are.

The Seat box I pulled out of a scrap car had the CDA code stamped on it, but was definitely cable change. The other odd thing about it was that the diff housing was larger than other o2a boxes i've seen and it had extra bracing between the ABF engine and gearbox. I did wonder if the box had an LSD fitted but couldn't find any extra info about it. It certainly wasn't quite the same as the mk3 golf ABF boxes although had the same code.

Good luck with the full strip and repaint, I know what that's like!
