Bit of smoke??

Post by bengould »

Firstly I know I should be concerned, but How much is the question?

I've got a cheap "260W" Amp I found in one of the cars at work, which today I've wired up to my front speakers.

I used it for a while at work to test various types of speakers from tweeters to twin sub boxes, All OK.

Put it in the car today along with some Crossovers, Pioneer 6"x4"s (200W Max) and some Pioneer 2" "Super Tweeters" (200W Max)
Got it all set up properly sat in front of the house, Again All OK, and went for a drive.

After about 10 mins decided to crank it up a bit and see what they can do.
Sounded Amazing but after about 5mins at quite high volume (goes to 50 was at about 40) I noticed there was a bit of smoke in the footwell. (Amp is on the shelf under the glovebox)
So immediately turned it all off.

Drove to the nearest place I could park up, just a couple of mins down the road, and had a look and feel. Not too hot and all still wired up properly.

So thought I'd chance it and turned it back on again. Put the volume at a sensible level and apparently all works fine, was in the car for about another hour the amp stayed cool and no signs of any smoke from anywhere. But didn't really dare turn it up more than 25.

Are the speakers too much for the amp, or is it just getting rid of a bit of dust/moisture from being stored and possibly a bit cold and damp for a while?

i'd get some light in there and have a good look at all the wiring to see if you can see anything that looks discoloured. i'm assuming you've got a fuse in the main power supply right next to the battery?

Wiring all looks perfect, No signs of smoke damage anywhere, No dodgy electrical burning smell anywhere, And yes is correctly fused (60A) about 6" max from the battery.

Been running it since generally on about 15-25, but have had it right up as high as it will go today, and not even a faint sign of anything goin wrong. Its starting to make me think I was imagining it.
