Plastic Door Trim

Post by DeeJayDready »

Last year I had the bottom of both my doors tidied up as they had a bit of rust (due to water sitting on the runner) and this had cause the plastic door trim to bend and not sit completely flush.

The plastic door trim was removed from the bottom of both doors, and any rust was cut out, filled in, then resprayed – good as new. The problem is that now there is no plastic door trim on the car at all. I still have my ones that I took off, but the metal bits in these have rusted too, and even if I could clean the rust and spray them, they cannot be reattached because it is impossible to remove the rock-hard bonding agent that was originally used to attach them to the door. So if I was to just fix these back on they would most likely sit out from the door (due to the extra glue used to attach them).

Does anyone know if these plastic panels can be sourced new from anywhere?
I could maybe get another set from a breakers yard, but they would surely just be filled with the same rock-hard glue?

Any ideas?

Try VW classic parts, do you have the part number off the old ones?

Sorry I don't know the part number. Wasn't able to spot any on VW Heritage though.

According to my Haynes manuel (pg 229) the correct term is 'Door Flare'.

I would say that they have been taken off at some point and the wrong adhesive used when putting them back on.

I've removed a few in the past and they've all been stuck on using a flexible adhesive.

So if there is a set in a breakers near you I would go and get them.

In a sence the ones I have have 'flexible' adhesive, in that it does bend with the flare. But is is still very hard, and in terms of getting it off it seems like a non-starter.

Have you removed any of this flexible adhesive from the plastic before? Or reattached any door flare? If so, any tips?

There's a Scirocco breaking quite near me on Gumtree, so I might be in luck. It's silver, but i'd be spraying mine anyway, so that's not an issue.

Sorry, missed this.

I didn't have any problems removing the gunk, just grabbed one end and it pulled off, although most of it was left on the donor car to begin with.

But the ones I took off were held on with a more rubbery type of adhesive than what you seem to have.

Fitting wasn't a problem either.
