As per title = Anyone know when did ventilated disks come in on MKII's ?

I have a reason for asking and if I am right "a garage" will have egg on their faces !

I'm going to guess 1984. This is when the Storm was released, and if I recall correctly it's also when the GTI was upgraded to the 1.8i DX engine (before giving way to the GTX later on). I reckon it's only 1.8i engined cars that would require vented discs, hence the guess. I imagine someone else will be able to give a more accurate date though.

1984 is also when a number of other features were changed over the original '82 models, including the space-saver spare wheel / larger fuel tank, twin wipers, and the change on the GTI from US-style headlights to the standard UK ones.

All mk2 injected cars had ventilated discs - so from late 1981. All mk1 injected cars did too :good:

Shows what I know! I'm quite surprised there was a need for them on the 1.6i cars.

OK so our D (85/6) reg GTS (carb) would be vented, right ?

I don't believe so - as above, all injection cars had vented discs. I think all carbed cars had solid.

Ah right :good:

Must check our 2 cars then (D reg GTS & K reg GTII)

Reason = Central VW, the golf / Scirocco / and GTi type Audi garage I use just rang to say that when they went to fit new (Pagit) pads to my D reg GTS, the pistons would not go far enough back into the callipers to allow them to go over the (new) disks and so I needed new callipers.

Now I DO KNOW that if you fit vented disks to a non vented disk car you need to fit the vented disk type pads (less meat on them) and I am wondering if their "vast experience" with these cars has let them down here !!

tbh, I am not too bothered about having to pay for new callipers as I am keeping this car and want it spot on, but it does warrant investigation :roll:

The calipers are the same for both vented and non-vented discs; however the non-vented discs are obviously thinner, and as a result can cope with thicker pads.

Likelihood here is that the new discs on the car are vented, and the garage are attempting to fit non-vented pads. In other words, they're talking out their rears when they say that you need new calipers. I'd personally drop them and go to a different garage if they're making such an obvious error.

That's what I thought too.

Yep I thought that too.
Plus I will want the old callipers back as it is likely there is nowt wrong with them !

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aside =
When I bought the car 12 weeks ago I took it to them to get it up in the air to check the brake pipes etc over as it was VERY cold, dark and wet here.
They said it was in good nick body and chassis wise but could do with new brake pipes, shoes, drums, cylinders and a wheel bearing.
No problem I said, do the lot, I am keeping this car and would only have to do the above for the MOT in Feb anyway.
I took the opportunity to get them to fit some slightly dropped Eibach springs and Fuch's shocks all round.
All = lots of money changing hands :cry:
12 weeks later it failed the MOT (at that same garage) on the rear flexi pipes :evil:
How come I thought, when only 12 weeks before they had inspected and replaced lots of brake parts :evil:
And they must have handled the flexi's to do the metal pipes.
Starting to loose confidence in them I am...
It depends what metal pipes they changed. If they did the long ones from front to back or the short ones at the back then yes they would have had to undo them from the flexis. As this is a pig of a job, even with the right tools, I'm surprised that they didn't ask for the few extra quid to replace them and I think you'd have very good cause for complaint.
Aye, they did them all (at my request)
Umm, I think I will complain with my feet as it were as, since we moved to near Whitchurch in Shropshire, they a ~25 miles away anyway :?
Oh, I forgot to mention = they have had the car for 10 days now to do "all this" :twisted:
Some garages don't half shoot themselves in he foot don't they !
A go source for checking what was fitted is the Drivers Found website. It has all the old brocheres for you to scour, and as been mentioned "all" injected cars had vented discs at the front.
I suppose any non vented disk car will have had vented disks retro fitted by now.
After reading the above words on the subject I checked both our (carb) cars and they both have vented disks.
I also suppose it was a bit rude of me to suggest the Central VW would be daft enough to try and fit the fatter non vented style pads to a vented disk set up and when I mentioned it to them they obviously had not missed that pitfall !
I HAD planned on a G60 / Late MKII golf front brake upgrade,but it took them 10 days to do an MOT that only needed 2 x rear flexis and this calliper / pad issue and because I needed the car back quickly (Ha, 10 days) I had to settle for standard new callipers, disks and (Pagit) pads. Pretty costly to end up with just standard brakes :evil:
Anyway it's working and it ain't a track car so hey ho...
