afternoon,

alternator belt snapped last night, got a new one today from GSF and it isnt big enough. it goes round the bottom pulley, the one next to it (water pump pulley?) then upto the alternator (obviously). but the one i have, oly goes round the bottom two pulleys ad nowhere near the alternator.

Not wishing to insult your intelligence but have you loosened the alternator right off?

no amount of losening will make it reach, not unless it wants to rub on the bottom pulley. i slid it over both pulleys, and there is about 2 or 3 inches where it is "loose", no where near where the alternator will go

I got my belts from the dealers, then I know they are the correct ones. It sounds as if you have been given the wrong type.

Did GSF give you right lenght belt? it should be 850mm x 10mm, well thats what I use an my 1.8 DX engine Golf and 1.6 FR engine Scirocco.

I expect GSF have given you the wrong belt, give them your engine code and the should give you the right one.

Or just go into Halfords and compare them (if Halfords still have them out on the shelves) and get a slightly longer one.

Get down to your local dealer, ask them for part No: 050 903 137 (at least that's what you need for a DX engine). Should cost you Approx £9.97 + vodka and tonic.

I remember getting an oil filter from them a couple of years ago, and the diameter was 2cm too wide...
