'75 ( yes really!) resto/rebuild

Hello chaps
I thought it was about time I started to let on what was happening with my '75 TS
Those of you with a long term affliction ( sciroccoitis! ) will remember this car as dave seaman's ( no , not that one...... ) car
I bought it ages ago, and started the very long process of gathering parts to fix it ......... and now ( da daaaa ) it's fairly well on the way to getting back on the road.
On inspection, after a strip down , it appeared to have 'gone' in some very unusual places for a mk1, the front valence under the bumper had rusted right out to the point of having a 3 inch round hole in it! along with lots of extra rust in there, both front wings were shot, as we're the sills and lots of the underside, but areas like the scuttle/ windscreen corners were perfect, as were bits like the headlamp mounting panels, and spare wheel well! I think it'd been left in a damp lockup for too long, and I think it'd been parked front end in, thus explains the rotten front. It had also had a bash in the rear quarter (driver side) And where it's been fixed had rusted quite happily.
It has only 35k on the clock though I'm not suggesting for a mo, that's the milage on it, but other than a poor seat retrim ( no blue tartan..... boo hoo) all the other interior bit are there and in great shape, including the uncracked damage free dash!
So, my good friend and fabricator extraordinaire Hayden Watson , who owns and runs Panelkraft in herts, has been left with the task of sorting out one of what must be the oldest right hand drive cars knocking about today.
I'll post up more pics after going over next week, but the list of panels used so far are ( deep breath)
Front panel ( series 1 pre 78)
Both front wings
Sills on both sides
Rear panel, again a really early one ( thankyou brad!)
And I also have a tailgate and doors
All NOS , and apart from the sills all VW ( praise the lord)
The floor pan need much help as the inner sills/floor pan join was pinholed all the way along, and what're the seat runners met the pan was the same. The beam mounts were really bad on the driver ( accident ) side but not so bad on the other side.
So that where it stands as we speak, in primer
Some before shots showing the state it was in, check that driver side sill!

A rare beast indeed! The welding looks amazing :good:
Any "plans" that you can reveal or is this to be a resto to standard :yup:

Cheers
The fellas amazing, he turned an ex Bundespost split bus that'd been used as a bee hive for 10 years! into a show winning bus that was on the cover of volksworld
Not standard, no. It's going to be modified........ But all in the best possible taste! :hehe:

The body will be standard though, including the side trim that normally gets binned, so it'll look perfect

Nice work. Is he lead loading the weld seams, or has he got them that flat just with the grinder? :hi: Hats off either way!

I'm confused by the starting colour of light blue turning into something more like viper green. What is the car's colour?

Awesome project ! quality work going on .

What is the difference in early and late rear panels and when did the y change?

Interesting to see it has the inner wing strengthing plates fitted, I had seen a couple of american sciroccos with them .

Were these a early feature?

Hello peeps
Cheers for all your messages, one of the things I really like about this forum is that's its small ( but perfectly formed! :buddy: ) and folk on it are positive and informative!
The reason I've waited so long to get the car done is that Hayden does it properly, he like to replicate the factory so uses a spot welder, and that's what gives the 'spiffy' end results
The green is the colour of the primer, it's an expensive 'high build' product ( or so he tells me ) the gold/bronze colour is a paint that you can weld through/on to, but the car will be painted the orig Lagun blue, not only to keep it orig, but because I love it!
There seems to be alot of strengthening sections On the car, at the front and rear c posts in the form of recessed panels that look like louvres, are the front inner wing parts unusual? I don't know
The rear panel looked the same as a late one but when I picked it up it still had the sticker on, which denoted an early ( series1) car
I'm off to the yard in the week and will get some more pics, and some more ideas about where the car is going!

Great, it's a lovely colour, one you don't see often either. Looking forward to seeing the finished article.

Really looking forward to seeing this car- heared about it from different people and have a passion for the 'earlies'.
Work so far looks top notch - pat the man that did this on the back!
Keep the pics coming - makes very enjoyable viewing.
