Having clutch issues again.

Sorry to be a bore but I'm going to start from the beginning to make sure I don't miss something important
Over Christmas my clutch started slipping. So I got myself a new clutch and bearing and off I went to get fitting it.
Now all seemed to go OK and worked well afterwards. I didn't end up changing the bearing because the little green cap didn't seem to want to come out and I didn't fancy ruining it.
Have been running it to and from work fine since, but today on the way in to work, the clutch pedal went very light and only just engaged right at the bottom. I got out popped the bonnet for a quick look, I checked firstly the Bulkhead where the cable goes through which was fine. The car was an auto before I got it so expected as much.
Then checked the cable at the gearbox end. The release arm was loose so I adjusted the cable out to the correct point and got back in. Pressed the pedal and it was so stiff it was a struggle to get all the way down. Also couldn't get the car in gear.
Pressed the pedal a few more times and it went loose again so got out and checked the cable and sure enough there was a bit of play there again, so wound it out a bit further, got back in and couldn't even move the pedal.

Managed to get back home by starting the engine in first, changing gear without the help of the clutch and turning it off every time I had to stop.

Gonna take the box off again now and see if I can see whats going on, but is there anything I should be looking out for??

Try a new cable before you go to the trouble of taking the box off.

Gave the cable a tug during the box removal, and is still OK.

The release bearing, push rod and plate is another story though.

Release bearing has totally collapsed,
The pushrod is a bit worn (and is this shape both ends so won't come out.)

And the plate it pushes on is just as badly worn.

Does anybody know if the plate is available without buying a complete new clutch kit?

For the £45 or so for the complete clutch kit it's worth changing the lot whilst you have it apart.
GSF sell the green cap as well.

The green end cap is NOT re-useable - you have to replace it with a new one.

Whilst you are replacing the pushrod, I suggest that you replace the seal and possibly the bush which is behind the seal.

If you want clear instructions and pictures on ANY 020 gearbox procedure, I can highly recommend http://www.brokevw.com/
