CV joints?

Post by KB88 »

Any advice for me here?
Basically i thought i needed my wheels balanced as i have shudder at about 80mph. I had them balanced but its still there, my friend mentioned the CV joints but im clueless about these parts and the work.
Could anyone advise me on this?
Edit:- Sorry, this is on a 1988 GT 1.6

Thanks

Do you hear a noise or feel the shudder at low speed? When CV joints are knackered the usually make a clonking noise.
I would get the wheels rebalanced at a different place, this is what I did when I first got my Storm.

I get shuddering around 80mph on the motorway. No clunking in and around town, only appears at speed.
I know the mechanic who balanced the wheels and i watched him do them, it looked fine to me.

I know the mechanic who did mine, but I got one of the other lads in the garage to redo them and they needed doing, and I watched!
How new are the tyres? Are the wheels in good nick?

The wheels themselves have seen better days. Tyres are fine.
They've been balanced twice now i think.

I have the same problem - no noise or clonking at low speed, happens at between 75-80mph, then stops after 80mph. Brand new wheels and tyres, fully balanced by my mechanic when they were fitted.

Both my sciroccos have done this. My theory is it is because of the way the suspensions mounted. All my mk2 golfs, with a big sturdy subframe, have been perfect at very high speeds. I reakon a lower brace would help?

cv joints will knock when turning tight corners.

and if it happens at 80mph your grand, can only do 70 anyway :hi:

I have a lower brace - no change. I guess it could just be that the 1.6 reaches its resonant frequency at that speed. :dunno:

So you have two choices then, 70mph or 90mph

I had the same problem on my car, but it only made a knocking noise now and again, i didn't have a clue what was wrong and this lasted for a few months until someone mentioned the CV joint, when i jacked the car up to check it i found that the drive shaft moved about quite easily and that the inner CV joint was totally knackered. Put a new one in and its sorted.

cheers
Tony

different tyre shops have different ways of balancing via where they place the weights - my local place sticks some on the flat surface inside the wheel as opposed to just on the actual rims. This has cured the high speed wobble on wheels that have been balanced elsewhere - in particular when getting wheels back from refurbers.

I've had a similar problem and it was due to poor balancing. Try and take it somewhere with a nice modern balancing machine, but most importantly someone that knows how to operate it.

Errr yeah, no longer think its the wheels now.
Im sure the CV joints or something are gone, i have a sound like the exhaust is rattling about but its not the exhaust. I think this is gonna be expensive. :crying:

Anyone know a good place to source these?
