Bike carbs won't get you anything over well set up dellortos. Ported head and cam would be the obvious way to go, depending on how far your budget will stretch.

I happen to have a 2.0 TSR engine for sale, if you're interested... either just the head and cam, or the whole lot. See the parts for sale, and drop me a PM if you're interested.

It's an injection head, so would need the injector holes blocking up with 1p pieces and a smear of hylomar.

Other than that, it should fit your bottom end fine, as would a standard injection head, if the budget it tight and you need to do it a cheaper way. Take a standard injection head, have it skimmed about 0.5mm, and add a performance cam, and you should see a decent power gain. You'd need the carbs re-jetted to suit, whatever set of mods you choose.

I have been into these cars for 12 years and we have had 3 of these models 2 dx engines 8v 1800 112 B.H.P injection Standard ours is up to 121 B.H.P at the minute one ex 95 B.H.P standard. and this is what i have learnt so far about more B.H.P you can put up to a 2 litre engine as far as i know ? i do not know if you can put a 3 or 4 litre as there is the space in the engine bay, all so sports air filter, power roar, audi throttle body, stainless steal exhaust and manifold but bear in mind the manifold the head might need to come as the bolts might snap as the manifold bolts have been on these heads for a long time and then the head gasket will need changing unless it is a high mileage engine you have we have a low one, as the old saying if it is not broke don't fix it, hope this all helps ?

LOL! Good advice here, gained over 12 years apparently. So a 2 litre engine fits maybe even 3 or 4 litre as there is room... And the head gasket will need changing unless it's a high mileage engine... Got it. Also, can you get it fitted in Halfords?

thanks, was feeling a little low today. now i feel much better :hehe:

to the OP, im assuming you have an 8v engine?

if you have twin dellorto's, keep them over the bike carbs for sure. they are much better for precise fueling across the entire range, rather than the bike carbs which can have flat spots. if you dont have a high lift cam, try one of these. you shouldnt see any lumpy idling issues with the standard carbed 8v or even 16v engine. i run a 272 degree cam and idle fine, a friend runs a 298 and idles fine - both in the 16v engines. i think the lump idling issues are more to do with the engine management trying to compensate at low revs.

how much are you looking at spending? a cam will set you back 200 pounds or so, a 4 branch exhaust mani will be 2-350 pounds, you'll need a flexible section welding in on the exhaust to stop the mani cracking - another 20-25 pounds, you could fit a 2 litre bottom end (do this before buying an exhaust manifold, as the manifold required may change) prob pick one up for 50 quid, plus 40 pounds worth of gaskets and another tenner for new stretch bolts.

the problem is though, if you have an 8v engine you can plow a load of dollar into it for a bit more power. or you can drop a 16v engine in there, with no modifications other than bolting on a new inlet mani (for the dellortos) and exhaust mani (saves time and effort trying to mate the mk2 golf downpipe to yours) and be looking at 130-145hp depending on how well the engine is set up. which is an easy 30hp more than the 8v, as standard. if you then saved for a high lift cam, p&p head etc and a RR session you could see 170-180 horses.

the only problem with this is you need to inform your insurers and change the V5, otherwise your insurance is invalid if you have a crash. 8v is an easier choice if you'll be happy enough with what you get. if at the end of it you still want more power....then you may have just wasted a few hundred pounds. if it was my daily, id do up the 8v with a cam, exhaust mani and have the car put on a rolling road to tune the carbs. if it was a toy for weekends or track/12 car events, id go 16v for sure.

speed is a question of money. how fast do you want to go? :beers:
