Carburettor Mounting keeps splitting
Hi folks.
I have a '91 GTII with a Webber Carb and a K&N Air Filter, however my Carburettor Mounting keeps splitting. When this happend air gets in and the car runs badly until it is replaced. This has happened 3 times in the last 18 months or so - and I would only do 5000 miles a year, max.
The original vw part is 026129761e but I can not get hold of these and have been using replacement ones like this: http://www.volksbits.co.uk/servlet/the- ... NAL/Detail
My mechanic reckons trying and original VW one would be worth go. Does anyone know where these could be sourced?

Moved into the correct location mate.
You could try VW Heritage/Big Boys Toys, they should be able to get one for you.

Re: Carburettor Mounting keeps splitting
i bet the filter housing is sat a little high and the bonnet when closed is forcing it down, putting the gasket under pressure/jaunty angle-ness!
...double check this isn't the case, then buy a thinner filter housing!

Re: Carburettor Mounting keeps splitting
I have a Volksbits rubber mount and was concerned about posssibe issues with air leaks.
However the rubber mount is fine and I just allowed the front of the air housing to sit higher adding a bracket..
Any strain put on the carb base i suspect could cause it to split or leak. I was paranoid a few months ago about leaks and messed about with the base/adaptor plate area a number of times. No problems even now still with the Volksbits Base.

Mac, the clip that holds your clutch cable to the air filter bracket should face downwards, not upwards like yours is, if you turn it the right way you may find your clutch lighter to operate mate.MacColl wrote:

Hey Ian
That's the accelerator cable in the clip. The clutch is below although I totally take your point as I had messed around with both cables in the fairer months tidying things up with cable ties. I'll check it out soon as a lighter clutch would be good

It is the clutch cable mate, the accelerator cable is much thinner.

Re: Carburettor Mounting keeps splitting
I stand corrected
Your right it's the clutch cable and the grey one I believe is the odometer for the dash.
The fact of the matter is I had ended up with the clip facing down, had to go out to the car there and check

All that studying your doing and you still don't know your clutch cable from your accelerator cable.
Good to know your still out and about.
Wish I had tucked my baby away for the winter as I have WATER in the passengers bay.
I have had the same base on since I changed over from the Pooberg and to date happy to report no problems.

Re: Carburettor Mounting keeps splitting
VW Heritage/Big Boys Toys is where my mechanic advised me to look, but I have tried their website and there doesn't seem to be any on there.
I think Jay4424 may be right in that the K&N Air Filter maybe sits slightly high as it sits up very close to the 'shelf' above. But surely the only way to change this is to buy a new, thinner K&N Air Filter, assuming one exists, which would probably be expensive.... but perhaps necessary?
@Old Mac Rocco - I also have problems with water getting in to the passenger side. Do you know why this happens? Is it a regular systemic problem?

Re: Carburettor Mounting keeps splitting
I would hazard a guess that the extra unsupported weight of your filter is causing your problems.
On the original setup the filter is supported has yours any ?

Not had a chance to investigate water yet.

Re: Carburettor Mounting keeps splitting
I bought the 'Volksbits' part for my '92 GT2 and it was rubbish. I bought an original VW one from my local VW dealer in Cardiff, perfect, but a lot more money, that was only a month or so ago?
