My scirocco scala has just started cutting out, drives fine but when revs drop to 1000 (at traffic lights etc) it cuts out! any ideas?? has had recent service and doesn't seem to misfire (has a cam in it though so is a little lumpy on idle)??

Your car should sit at idle at between 850-950 rpm. Have you changed the usual suspects, dizzy cap/rotor arm/plugs and leads etc?
Check the idle control valve and all the vacumn hoses.

Peirburg carb ?

Does it only do this when hot ?

If so then the first thing to look at is the solenoid at the back of the carb not working or not getting the correct signal from "relay" 61 (NOT a relay btw) - (if you look at the left rear of the carb, you will see 2 rubber covered plug & socket connectors, the solenoid is connected to the one furthest in. You should hear it "tick" when you turn the ignition to "on".

Note that this solenoid is always fed with 12Volts (when the ign is on) and it is actually activated by "relay" 61 earthing the brown wire with black stripe.
You can test whether it is solenoid itself, or the "relay", by cutting the brown wire with black stripe a few inches from the carb and fastening the solenoid side of it to an earth (the earth strap on the carb to cam cover is the obvious choice) - if it ticks then when you turn the ignition on & off it is likely (but not 100%) that "relay" 61. Doing this mod will very likely cause it to tick over much too fast when not up to temp, it is just a test procedure I use.

Also, as said, check ALL the little vac pipes on the carb (take the carb off = it is much easier, in fact can't really be done in place) DON'T get mixed up re what pipes go where !! = Do them one at a time if they need changing.

I bet after all that it is a Webber on there Image

With an injector one, have a look how clean the idle control adjuster is. Its at the back of the throttle body. May be clogged up with dirt. Take the bolt thingy out and clean. Then blast down the hole with carb cleaner. Will need a few extra turns of the starter to start it first time afterwards and run rough for the first minute. Warm up the engine fully with oil at 90'C and adjust the engine idle with the idle control you just cleaned to 975rpm.

Also check all the vacuum pipe rubber hose connections all over the engine bay. Replace any that show perished rubber (cracking), even if its alright.
