Is this "scuttle shake" (I bet you have heard this noise)

Hi All

The following is not a "problem" as such, just curious.

OK, New Eibach springs, (30mm drop) new Sachs dampers, new top mounts, bump stops modified, all done by Central VW in Ellesmere port (and they seem to know what they are doing :) )
Also new ARB brackets and bushes all round.
Fitted 4 x new Pirelli P6000's on P'slot alloys.

Result = I am VERY happy, the car sits well, handles well, no "crashing" or pitching of the suspension, even on the fairly rough & twisty "B" roads in the countryside where I live, and the ride quality is fine. It is virtually un-stickable, even in the wet, it just grips and grips to a ridiculous extent, I try to push it over the limit but I run out of balls before the car will slide ! (tall hedges bring an element of paranoia ! - must try the "wet deserted roundabout test" ;) )

I have had the following on all 4 Rocco's I / we have owned (and "her" current GTII does it now, on standard suspension) and I have experienced it on other cars too.

Imagine you are pushing it a bit ;) around a B road bend at say 50mph, you run across a bit of rough tarmac (like a duff surface that is breaking up), you get a kinda deep rumble / banging (but not sounding like the hard "knocking" from a duff bush). It sounds as if it is either coming from the steering column or perhaps the bulkhead (Steering column has no play in it I cab detect btw). Remember, I have experienced this on all the Rocco's I have driven and also on other cars.

It does not do it if you are breaking hard in a straight line and you go over a bit of rough, so I don't think it's owt to do with bump stops or top mounts.

As the suspension will be pretty well loaded up at the time, could this be "shuttle shake" ?
Or perhaps summat to do with steering rack mountings flexing ?

p.s. The lower strut brace is going on tomorrow, will be interesting to see if that has any affect on the above.

300mm drop? Surely not!

It quite clearly states 30mm drop and the "edited one time in total" is just a server error ;)

It's not scuttle shake so much as poor isolation from the road and noise feedback paths back through the rack and bulkhead, mostly I think because the rocco front end isn't built on a subframe which can have the steering rack and wishbones mounted on it to help reduce this. The mk 2 Golf was a big improvement in this area, in fact driving a bog standard one around for a month or two recently surprised me how much more civilized the car was in that regard.

If you want to experience scuttle shake, try a mk1 cabby or mk1 mx5 on rough roads, the whole car shakes and flexes and shudders with bumps as the front and back do different things over bumps. :hehe: Both those cars are good fun though!

Good to hear you are liking your Eibach setup after everything :D

Ah, that sounds about right judging from the noise it makes.
So there is not much you can do about it without major work (which ain't going to happen on this car)

Yel, I am happy with it, <a href="http://www.centralvwaudi.com/" ... e Port</a> were quite humorous about it, they knew I was researching the options and good naturedly said "stop worrying, just leave it to us, we have done this set-up lots of times and it works well" and they did have a certain "I told you so" tone when, after a few hundred miles, they asked me if it OK
