I've taken collection of this little champ, mostly in bits, and in need of the engine setting up after a carb caught fire.
Its gonna be my first 'proper' project. Indiana Red - my favorite Mk1 colour, so its staying that way. After thinking I'd never find a mk1 ever Ive gone to owning two in the space of a fe months

The interior parts seem complete at first glance but need assembling. The sunroof is gonna be fun... Rust in both rear arches goes right through, I'm gonna have to have this done professionally. Anyone got an idea what this might cost? It came with a spare tailgate, so up for grabs if anyone needs it - in silver.

Gonna keep the gold one standard as its so original, it can stay that way, as soon as I mod it I think it will devalue. With this i'm happy to play around with it.

Nice to see yours in the flesh at e38, I was gonna say hello but there was a queue! The g sits nicely in the bay, such a brilliant engine that too.

Can someone help me out I'm looking at a mk3 2.0 8v engine. Will I be able to use a standard exhaust system? Also will the wiring or inject present any major hurdles? Cheers

Winston, your mk1 is now my desktop, the photo shoot pics are great.

Today I started early and took a grinder to the last drive shaft, fed up of spline bolts shearing, and dropped the old 1.6 out. It went in the bin i'm afraid cos i just dont have space for two engines at the moment.


This is gonna be slow going, it takes me 1/2 an hour just to pack all my stuff back in the garage. The new motor is out of the van and sat waiting a bit of a strip, thanks to a few mates it went as planned!


Thats all for now, gotta do some more research into engines, seems the 9A electrics arent as good as KR setup, and what with having poo cams i'm looking for a KR and box now. Either that or install hydraulic clutch, and cable shifter.

I took the ream beam off in the week and lowered the fuel tank off tonight, I knew there was a good bit of rot around the rear mount but I had a chance to have a good look at it. Quite a hole around the sill. Ive seen repair panels for this kicking about i think.



The drivers side is the worst and the passenger side is rusty but not half as bad.



under the tank is okay, i will rub it down a bit and apply some underseal.



Fuel Filler area was good, I hope to catch it just before it got too bad.



My rear beam in a few bits, awaiting a refurb, all new parts on order.



A few parcels arrived yesterday, inc manifold, full kjet injection with 1600 gti metering head, and wiring loom taken from a 16v conversion, all labelled u by Paul C on Mk1 golf forum - hoping this is going to be the defining purchase! Oh and Cabby driveshafts.



Lots of fun, the rear beam being such a satisfying job in itself.

Any tips on what to do with the rust would be greatly appreciated....

Let me know if you want any more pictures of repairing rust on a mk1. I have plenty....

You can use the KR or the ABF cam, either will give a big improvement over the standard 9a. Looks like a good project, look forward to seeing how it comes out!

I got some KR cams for a £4 plus postage, quite please with that purchase!

I'd love to attempt the welding myself, and now is as good a time as any to learn to weld, in at the deep end!

I think i'm quite limited with the council garage, and i'm getting complaints about working outside, as its kinda public space. If anyone in the new forest area know of some space to do the work it would be really useful.
