Front shock dust covers

Sorry but this is on my Mk1 golf convertable

I've found that my old dust covers on the font shocks had been destroyed somehow so while refurbing the front suspention I replaced the bump stops and dust covers, I've how driven 25 miles across the somerset levels and one of them is now also broken :ire:

When I took the springs off I did check the front shocks and they seemed OK, quite stiff when pulling the shock up and down, but every now and then a little bit of play.

The thing is there is only 10mm between the bumpstop and the top of the nut that hold the insert in the strut, but these are the original springs and some gas filled Boge shocks both done about 100,000 miles as I did have a lowering kit on the car for 9 years, there is about 5cm between the wheel and wheel arch so its not low.

The bump stops are the same as the original ones fitted but they seem really close?

Any Ideas, new shocks? shorten the bump stops?
