Mk1 boot struts. too weak or boot too heavy?

recently bought some struts off a member and they seem in working order. the original ones i had with the car never worked, so nothing to compare to. they new ones don't come close to holding the boot up! doesn't take any of the weight!

could the wiper motor etc be heavy enough to make a difference? The new struts are from a wiper free earlier mk1.

anyone else have similar troubles?

I've seen all the websites which sell them, SGS, tailgatestruts.com etc but i have no idea if they are any good?

I have SGS struts in my Scala and can thoroughly recommend them, quality gear.

Brand new VW ones available from VW Classic Parts/VW Heritage - you just need the part number.

This page on Wagenstad might help …

http://www.wagenstad.com/index.php?modi ... e=8-152-00

Items 23 and (23) offer possible part numbers, but the Search facility on the VW Heritage failed to recognise any of them. However, on the main VW Classic Parts site 533 827 550 A throws up Gas Spring and if you drop the ‘c’ from the other part number a search on the site comes up with Support.

Don’t know if that helps or just makes matters more confusing, but thought it worth posting. It might be best if you gave VW Heritage or Classic Parts a call.

And if you do get them be interesting to know what they cost.

:beers:

The struts on my mk1 hold the boot easy and take quite a bit of force to close, so I can't see filler or anything making much difference.
