Yo, possibly the stupidest question this week but with a kit such as this...

Is it oil that circulates through to the "radiator" or water? Gotta be oil right?

Cheers, are they a massive step up from the standard VW items? Specifically the square ones that just fit between the housing and oil filter?

I run a 19 row oil cooler (oil to air) on my 16v race car.

They have 2 main advantanges. 1 - It removes the standard tempramental oil to water cooling unit. 2 - if siad unit fails it mixes the water with oil!

Disadvantes are that it takes longer to warm to oil up, due to no coolant heat transfer, and more gubbins in the engine bay.

What makes you think you require a cooler? Oil temp problems?

Totally what I thought dude, never struck me as a good design to have water and oil so close together......

I'm building a very fruity engine based on a MK3 tall block, which naturally came with the standard oil cooler. Plus I like spending money on the Scirocco!

Cool , sounds good.. Might be worth looking at getting a thermostatic take off plate which will help the oil get up to temp a bit quicker!

Sound, looked into those but a little bit involved for me, I kinda want the engine to look factory too. Plus the car won't see a track day to be fair, its my baby as sad as it sounds!

I always let the engine a bit upon start up anyways mate, cold oil won't really bother me too much.

Did some 80s VW not have a factory external oil cooler fitted tho? Did they suffer the same temp issues that you mention dude?

Yes, the early (pre 83) GTI's had an external oil cooler, it sat to the right of the radiator.
I never experienced any oil temp issues with the cars I owned.

For my next race car I'll be buying a Mocal laminova oil cooler.. The touring car boys use these with good results! And they look a bit more factory.. They plumb in to the radiator top hose and are super efficient! Basically the oil lines from your take off plate go through it much like a regular air to oil cooler.. We fitted one to a 1.8t Mk2 with a Gt28rs track car with perfect results!

Hows choppin' up the rad hose factory? See your point tho dude, looks a nice bit of kit, touch pricey for my needs tho.

Just outside Didcot, or Reading, either/or!.. Anything can be made to look factory with the right hardware! Matt black (classic) silicon hoses and plain fittings etc!
