manifold cracked ,i think

i think my mk 2 storm has a crack in the exhaust manifold,the noise sounds like one bad tappet that gets worse when accelarating.whats the best and easiest way to check it,any help will be appreciated .johnsm

Get it up on a ramp and have good look with a touch or very bright light same under the bonnet for cracks.andybody else got any other ideas to help this person out with this ?

most common causes of noise from the manifold are; blowing gasket between head and manifold, the friction ring between manifold and down pipe or the down pipe its self, this corodes where the twin pipes meet at the top.

exhaust manifold to head gasket would be the most likely. get a decent inspection light and have a look. you will most likely see some soot staining around where it is leaking. same would apply if it was a crack, but for it to sound as you describe i think it isn't that likely, unless it has gone very close to the head

I had the same problems you have. The loud tappet noise when acclerating. Turned out that the weld where the 2 pipes meet had cracked away and there was a small hole.

Get a long bit of garden hose and put one end to your ear and the other around the exhaust/manifold and try to find the noise. Be careful not to touch the exhaust to much with the hose pipe, they do melt!

As Whitescala89 said I've had the exhaust blow there a couple of times so might be worth checking first, you will need to be under the car to get the hose pipe in there.

Get a mirror on a stick and a light, even a small hole or gap will make a big enough stain to see...Or A long winded way if you cant get underneath the car. Put a bit of oil in the spark plug holes, start it up and block the end of the exhaust with your hand. See if any white smoke comes out the engine bay.

I've got a compression gauge there so was going to test the cylinders first and see what the results are if there are any issues ill prob just replace the block but keeping the cylinder head and mechanical fuel injection system
