Scirocco Register

Thought I’d do a build thread of the building of my new man space for fun, now before you too excited its only a car port, but it will be 15m2 of covered space that the rocco and my new works bench will live in

So this morning started by going for all the timber, after a failed run to a charity run timber recycling centre (it was cheap, and there was a reason for it, lets just say it all came with nails attached) we arrived home with our haul



Okay first and most important job was setting out the feet and getting them levelled, this took quiet some time ;)



Then the post went up and some of the bracing all bolted into place with threaded bar, and got to use the very useful 13mm socket :)



that’s how it is tonight after half a day, tomorrow the rest of the frame will go up, then its painting, guttering and roofing. Good job I’ve got the week off!!!! and fingers crossed the weather holds only got rained off for half an hour today.

Concerning the neighbours, they knew about it before we started, although even I was a bit shocked by how far forward from there house it comes. Their only real concern was that their gas meter which has to be read from my drive, could still be accessed. Well it can (although the gas board should never have put it there) but they’ll be a rocco permanently parked in front of it!!!!!!

Tuesday-

Up early on Tuesday morning only to discover it was raining a lot, my dad finally came round at just gone 9 and after brew and some weather checking we finally got out at 10:00 not bad considerin it was meant to be a 8:30 start. So the first job was to start the roof, so we started by fixing a 4”x2” to the wall o the house, unfortunately who ever did the overhang at the front of the house didn’t have a straight edge and the red bricks are not in line with the main house wall!!!!!!

Still by lunch we had made some headway-





And how the roof members are bolted to the posts, used threaded bar, this is sooooooooooo much cheaper than coach bolts.



After lunch the last roof member was put into place and the 2”x2” was cut and put between then to allow the roofing sheeting to be screwed to. We only got stopped once by the rain while doing this-





With the weather not looking good to good for the rest of the week and it dry, after something to eat I started the painting, by 9pm (after a short break to out the little one to bed) the first primer coat was done!!!!



Jut one thing, to add some rigidity to the frame we added a cross brace-



Wednesday-

Early start due to the weather meant that the second coat of undercoat was on by 10:30, then the final gloss coat on by 12:30 so after just over 7 total hours of painting-





It was then a case of dropping the other half of at work and taking my mum the B&Q (retired 10% discout day) to get the roofing and guttering. With some damaged roof panels resulting in another 10% off was happy. Unfortunately as usual you can never get everything from one B&Q so after visiting 2 I still need some bits, so lucky No.3 tomorrow!!!! Also found out while fitting the guttering that one of the retaining straps in the joint part was missing so that needs going back.

Anyway guttering is on, just need the joint mentioned above fitting, only problem was i had to trim the bolts down through the posts to allow the gutter to get past :)



And the latest haul ready for fitting on Friday, oh and don’t buy the roofing securing screws from B&Q 10 for £4!!!!! screw fix 200 for £17 bargin :)





Oh and I fitted this last week (granted need to sort out some electrics in the house, down to the plug socket being used turned out was hooked up to a 6amp circuit breaker, this is being fixed)



Okay so jobs to do tomorrow, finish guttering and pipe it to the drain, this will require making a step, you’ll see why. Then Friday get the roof on. After that just need to build a bench, nearly there

On the subject of planning permission, it would need to be more than twice the size before this is required, looking good.......oh and someone put the concrete fence posts in upside down

Not much done today, partly due to it raining for most of it, but also had promised the little one i'd take her to chill factore to go play in the snow, its abit strange to be dressed for winterwhne in in the mid 20's!!!!!!

any how the rest of the day was spent running around getting the last of the bits, as said above with screwfit being owned by b&q they were fully stocked, shame the roofing fixing screws were on a 7 day delivery!!!!! thankfully Travis Perkins came to the rescue :) so all ready for finishing tomorrow.

the only jobs done today was to finish off the guttering now i had the joint and start the pipe work-





only issue was having to lift the gate up a few inches to miss the pipe and allow room for a step to go over :)

the only other issue I've had is with the external socket, when i fitted it i had it plugged into a socket in the hall, only to find out that this was run off a 6amp curcuit breaker, meant only for the central heating, the boiler id plugged in!!!!!!! so everytime i plugged anything in it would trip the breaker. So today replaced the breaker with a 16amp one and my sockets are now working :)

A carport has to be open on at least 2 sides.....or you will need planning permission :)

no for now it will stay open, dont think the neighbours are ready for that!!!!!! lol

Okay last update, ITS FINISHED :)

My Dad was round again to get the roof on and by mid afternoon it was done-







The sheets stated 30 fixings per sheet!!!!! Seriously that was over the top, half that did the job!!!!!

The roof edge to the house was sealed with self adhesive flashing, a messy job but worth it



The last of the piping was done and the step installed over (this was a nightmare and took way too long)



And finally the rocco has its new home-





Unfortunately the bench to the rear of the car port wont fit-





Still theres room for a wood store for the burner, which was the real reason for the bench so its not that bad, the whole thing came in at about £300

And one last shot :)



Really happy with it and not only does it give protection to the rocco over winter but also gives me a dry space to do any DIY, the other half has started a list!!!!!!
