Tweeters and 6x4s?

I don't want to fanny around with custom door-builds etc, but I would quite like to have some tweeters somewhere closer to the region of my ears. This means I'd probably need some 6x4s and some tweeters separately. Can I do this? Will it just sound trousers?

I think this covers what you want, means disconnecting the tweeter in the 6x4 though.

disconnect the tweeters in the 6x4"s. if you do that AFTER the capacitor, you can use that for your new tweeter. That'll have the effect of running the 6x4 cone full range, and the tweeter in high pass. It works in the coax speaker, so it'll work when the tweeter's elsewhere. Mine's currently running this type of setup.

If you want to run the 6x4 cones in low pass, you'll need dedicated crossovers. but you'll soon source some on :ebay: as a crossover from pretty much any components'll do what you want.

I like the concept of doing this, as it allows you to keep the standard grilles. I would definately look at filling the gap round the extremity of the driver though... Time VERY well spent. I reckon the weakest link is actually the outer suspension of the 6x4"s which (by being the same section all the way round) stress the cone unevenly. As far as I can tell, this is why a round cone with a similar surface area will be likely to have better low frequency response. As you're crossing over to a sub, it's unlikely to be an issue for you.

That's probably your best option although I've got no idea how it sounds. I ran tweeters and normal 6x4s while I was waiting and it was fairly grim

I suppose the other option might be a 4" component system, which would fit in the original speaker space and just need a mounting plate behind the grille. Something like this:

Worth a go as it should fit fairly easily but I can't see a 4" giving the punch you need.

I tried loads of combinations including 4's in the doors on mounting plates and personally wasn't happy with it. Those components will probably sound better if amped but for that price you may as well spend more and buy/make your own door builds and get some 5.25's. You'll be surprised how much better a larger speaker sounds. My tweeters are sat on my dash. The best place for them would be the A pillars but you'd need to fabricate a pillar mount for that to work.
