Finally back from the garage! New master cylinder, rear cylinders, balance valve, rear brake lines, front flexible hose and a modified Golf coolant pipe fitted to replace an unavailable, corroded original.

Since DG Autotech were supposed to have given the car a major service after I bought it in March, I can highly recommend not going to that particular VW "specialist."

Harborne Garage never disappoint.

Got up late this morning and knew I was going to miss my train to work, so decided to jump in the GTI.

On the way home, I noticed a cloud of steam from the engine bay when I pulled up at a roundabout - pulled over at a garage and found a large pool of rusty water collecting under the car. Traced the leak to a split hose connecting to the block.

Looks like I need to give the cooling system a good going-over as well!

Please see my post in Tech section to help with advice:

Thanks to the efforts of the above Autoad, managed to get out for a spin this afternoon after changing the starter motor got the old girl going again. All the hoses now appear to be watertight, although the system will need flushing again to clear out some more crud. I'll probably replace all the coolant hoses when the weather improves, if I get some time...

Did you deliberately buy the car to match the cat? Very nice anyway (the car).

It's the cat's car. He likes to make sure it's properly looked-after.

A few finishing touches to sort out before the general public get to appreciate its majesty at the NEC.

Great time at the NEC, plenty of admirers, including my favourite chap (possibly my new best friend) who was as excited about my original 1984 VAG car alarm as I am.

Anyway, after a clean it was time to finish off the outside of the car before the show started.

When I bought the car, the original owner said that he hadn't been happy with the way the factory side stripes had been applied - so the dealer gave him a replacement set. Needless to say, he never got around to fitting them. Good news for me, as the respray meant the original stripes had to bite the dust. So, 28 years later, those replacement stripes (thankfully cut to length and supplied with 3M applicator) are finally on the car. I breathed a huge sigh of relief once they were in place, looking reasonably straight and with no real dramas.

Now tucked away in my favourite lock-up (it's the biggest and driest).
