I've bought Bilt Hamber products for rust prevention and am quite interested in what you do in terms of steam cleaning underneath and thereafter. Would love to get under mine with some sort of power washer before addressing rust spots.

Just an observation is the rear tailgate transfer, you probably know this but can be bought here (that's if it's the right one)..

Thanks :-)

Got one already! It let's the car down from the rear I agree! Just a pretty Standard steam cleaner and good stiff brush! And getting right in there with the wax oil on a brush after.. I use the clear stuff as it dries nice and satin.. Looks good and protects like a dream!

The drivers door is in need of replacing really, but I'll end up getting a good one and getting both the sides painted.. All in good time though! - Really hate lowering other people work on my car.. The MOT work was a 1 off, as I said..

Xmas was a chance to get some much needed things for the garage as ever!

Got myself some tracking gear! Very easy to use and now my GTX drives in a perfect straight line, with the rack centred and doesn't pull a single bit! Mint! So chuffed :vcool:

Obviously will be very handy for the race car too, I can now hit as many curbs and corner aprons as I like! :groove:

Anyway, no one seems to car about project threads with no pics! So without much further ado!

So with the roads Being salted on a more regular basis now, I decided that it was time for some rust prevention. I thought it was about time to pull off the body kit and have a look at what it was like. (I'd been avoiding this job, and losing sleep about what I mighty find!!!). So with a dry day today I got the steam cleaner and compressor with waxoyl gun ready and pulled the body kit off to see what horrors were waiting to confront me! To say I was surprised was an understatement, I'll let the pictures do the talking...

Rear panel after a pressure wash and a waxoyl. It's spotless front and back, no damage to the lower lip whatsoever. :vcool:

So I thought my luck was going to run out when I removed the sill covers. Again this is after a quick pressure was and coat of waxoyl. No even the start of a scan of rust! Either side! Couldn't believe it...

The whole underside of the rear of the car was steam cleaned and thourally degreased to remove any dirt grime and salt, and waxed all over and properly in the cavitys too.. Then all bolted back together with freshly steam cleaned body kit. :groove:

In preparation for do the front end next weekend I got the front hubs and bearings assembled ready to fit right up.. Power coated parts really are tidy!

More next week! :beers:

Haha, if I have the same luck upon removing the front arches and valance I'll buy you one for sure!

Having had the rear arches done last year, pics of that earlier in the thread, I now know its rust free up to there at least! It's so satisfying cleaning it up, waxoyling it and cavity waxing it, knowing you no longer have to worry about it! :bye:

Cheers mate, :buddy:

So whilst doing some filing and sorting out my paperwork of all sorts I thought I'd had a good look through the cars history and receipts etc.. It turns out, astonishingly, that it has EVERY MOT certificate that it ever went for, the original delivery note, and delivery inspection certificate.. As well as the original Blaupunkt 'Cambridge 35' stereo instructions and warranty, and all the correct service manuals and instruction manuals! :vcool: check it out!

All the receipts going back well into the 80's too! - photos aren't really necessary for that lot though!

The more I read, the more it makes me want to restore this and not modify it from standard spec.. What d'ya recon??

To be honest the only thing that would need modifying on a standard GTX would be the suspension and I'm sure with your experience you could come up with an oem looking solution :good:

The more I say the more gutted I am I sold it. As before though happy to see it getting much deserved TLC. I know the owners of this car going back to the late 80s when it was bought as an approved used car, just never had the time and cash to do it justice. Glad I rescued it from abandonment on the streets of Farnboro - the only car I have ever bought twice.

Keep up the good work :beers:

Many thanks, glad to get the approval of the previous owner as always!

Parts arriving in cribs and drabs as I need them.. Steering rack bushes (standard 'meyle') and front bumpstops (standard 'febi-bilstien').

In other non scirocco news, new cylinder head from Dave Crissel @ all stage cylinder heads. Is a late spec 051 casting KR head. Also some water wetter - can't say enough good about this stuff, it really made a difference on the race car. I run it with nothing but water and water wetter with very good results. Obviously will be waiting till the sub freezing conditions pass before changing the head over. It doesn't act as an anti freeze..

Considering selling it... New job and house move means it will be neglected for a few years which I can't bear!

Pm me serious offers:

All the bits that I've accumulated will be included in the sale. All the brake parts and powdercoted parts yet to be fitted!
As you can see a straight, honest, original car that needs an enthusiasts home
