:beers: Cheers mate!

I dont really clean and polish her much as I should, but it makes it worth it when I do! I love the old matt black body kits too. Hopefully once I get all these new parts and bushes etc on, she'll drive a bit tighter!

Wish I could find a quiet set of clocks and a mint dash, as those are details which are REALLY irritating me at the moment!..

Also anyone know wheres a good place in the Berks/Oxfordshire area to get my wheels re-furbed? They are by no means bad at all, but I want to get 4 new matching tyres before winter so it seems like a sensible idea as most places offer tyre fitting etc.

As much as I loathe people offering their opinions on one's car, I'm going to be a hypocrite and do it anyway...

I think a set of red pinstripes on the bumpers (ie paint the inserts Mars Red) would top that off brilliantly

Im pulling the faded bumpers off for a 'restoration' process soon, so i'll get the Mrs busy with the old Photoshop! see what they look like! The windscreen wipers are currently off being powedercoated matt black as well, which will tidy things up a bit.. Every little helps!

As ever your car has been an inspiration as I have been doing similar suspension/bush work and always interested in what your next step is :good:

I'm jealous of how clean the body looks. I've always liked the look of black and red on early vw's

hi Henry, I can't fault Lepsons - who i assume would pick up from Jtech?? they do/did from the Phirm.
The guys there do also use a company in the Hartley Wintney areas, can't recall the name - give Kristian a call next week in the office.

Managed to get the first stage of things under-way today.

With the MOT looming, I changed the front wishbones for powder-coated genuine items, Febi-Bilstien bushes, Lemfoder ball joints, Lemforder track rod arms and ends, and painted/restored all the brackets and replaced all the nut/bolts washers. Converted the ball joints to M8 for good measure... Smeared a bit of wax-oil around for good measure too.. Its exceptionally straight and rust free!

To say it feels much improved is an understatement.. As soon as I buy the new standard springs I will fit the fully restored/new strut assemblies! and the new hubs with bearings.. Might even get a chance to fit up my 16v front brakes.. Will let it settle for a few days then get the tracking done. Its not far out having measured the old ones first.. :good:

Pictures to follow:

there's a lot to be said for a clean mars red mk2 with a black body kit and a few tasteful tweeks like this one.

Well, MOT today! - I had a quick look a the previous advisory sheets and thought i'd put it in and see what they said.. (Draycott Engineering in Didcot).

Needless to say it failed on a few little bits: Front springs (both broken) - which I knew about, rear wheel bearing play, front brake in-balance, badly fitted rear brake hose and a split steering rack gaiter.
I never drive the car on the limit or anywhere near it so hadnt noticed the front brake in-balance.. The rear wheel bearings were an advisory on the last, so that wasn't much of a suprise..

Much against my normal approach of doing it myself (I just cant be assed with the weather as it is at the moment) I dropped my new front dampers and stut cases and top mounts down along with some new VAG springs, along with a new gaiter. They fitted all that along with a new rear brake hose for me. the rear wheels bearings nipped up fine, and the slider pins on the front brakes were all cleaned and re-lubricated. Had the tracking downe for good measure - So now we have the all important PASS! :vcool:

The bloke said what a nice example it was, and completely rot free for a change!

Hopefully going to get all 4 wheels off and on stands this weekend for a spot of steam cleaning and waxoiling and general winter weather preperation. So i'll put some long overdue pic up then! :thankyou:

Henry

Congrats on the M.O.T :good: As ever inspired and have to admit jealous at how clean and rust free it is.

I've bought Bilt Hamber products for rust prevention and am quite interested in what you do in terms of steam cleaning underneath and thereafter. Would love to get under mine with some sort of power washer before addressing rust spots.

Just an observation is the rear tailgate transfer, you probably know this but can be bought here (that's if it's the right one)..
